1883 megbeszélése

I'm only halfway thru the first season and am enjoying it so far, but there is some crazy stuff that really bugs me.

  • Getting rid of the oxen. The reason was that they drank too much water. Which is true. But they also eat almost anything in front of them and are far more sturdy than horses. They are also a moving food supply. The only reason agrarian societies shifted to horses is you can ride them as well. Problem is, none of these migrants can ride.

  • So they round up some wild horses. Miraculously these are all broken in and ready for the trip and equipped with saddles and tackle without explanation.

  • Because they have no food supplies they then round up wild cattle to take with them. But wait, didn't they just get rid of all their trained oxen because they used too much water? Ox ARE cattle ffs.

  • River crossings. I get it that a small group would have problems with this, but we are talking about many dozens of people. Some of whom are carpenters and blacksmiths. Most of whom were farmers familiar with building things. Trees everywhere. Seriously, they could build a temporary bridge in less time than it took them to find a better crossing. Even if it's just a pontoon bridge.

This stuff really bugged me, particularly since the guide had supposedly done this trip several times already. The guy really had no idea at all.

Half way there as well. The start was very strong, especially first two episodes. But after that things really took a dive, the episodes became boring, nonsensical, with a lot of unnecessary melodrama and unhinged sentimentality. I was really bummed after the 5th episode the way this show turned out to be.

I can also add to the absurdity is how all these immigrants suddenly learned English and spoke like a native speakers very fast. They were all poor peasants from Europe, I don't think they went to schools and studied anything, not to mention other language.

I don't think I will continue with this show, unless someone that already saw it will tell me that the show returns to the rough realism of the first episode. I will try to watch Yellowstone instead, but I am not sure it will be any better.

Just a warning about Yellowstone. I went to watch this after finishing 1883 only to realise I had watched an episode or two a few years back. It's a soap opera of the Dallas type. Just set in a rural situation. You might like that sort of thing, I sure don't.

So it's again a soap opera full of melodramas and sentimentality? Usually I don't like stuff like that at all. I will give it a chance for few episodes.

As I recall it was not so much sentimental as 'who's screwing who and who's not paying', in both the literal and figurative senses.
