Les maisons de Lancaster et d'York se disputent la Couronne d'Angleterre. Richard Plantagenêt, benjamin du duc d'York, est fermement décidé à marcher dans les pas de son père et à l'aider à détrôner le roi Henri.

Le duc d'York part affronter les troupes de Marguerite d'Anjou. Richard, lui, est forcé de rester auprès de sa mère, qui le confine dans une tour.

Après le décès du duc d'York, son fils Édouard prend sa relève et combat vaillamment les troupes ennemies. Richard, qui erre sur le champ de bataille, est pris de pulsions meurtrières.

Henri, qui a faussé compagnie aux siens, est activement recherché par son épouse, Marguerite d'Anjou. Chez les York, Richard est tenu de préserver le secret de son frère Édouard, désormais nouveau roi d'Angleterre.

L'affront d’Édouard à la France a marqué les esprits et commence à jouer en sa défaveur. Les Lancaster cherchent toujours à reconquérir le trône, et le comte de Warwick, de son côté, ne se remet pas du choix de son suzerain.

Richard et Catesby essaient de retrouver la trace d'Édouard. Lorsque le benjamin des York tombe nez à nez avec le fils de Marguerite d'Anjou, il saisit l'occasion d'infiltrer les lignes ennemies.

Warwick continue d'avancer ses pions pendant qu'Édouard, récemment libéré, confie une mission à Richard. Ce dernier, accompagné de Catesby, devra emporter un symbole fort de la maison d'York.

Tout en poursuivant son désir de vengeance, Richard cherche un moyen de rallier son frère Georges à la cause des York. Ce dernier finira t'il par entendre raison ?

Édouard et Georges affrontent Warwick et les Lancaster. Richard finit par retrouver Henri, mais comment réagiront-ils en découvrant qui ils sont réellement ?

L'héritier des Lancaster, Édouard, a hâte d'en découdre sur le champ de bataille. Marguerite et Anne ont la ferme intention d’empêcher le jeune homme de prendre part au combat.

Édouard fête la victoire de la maison d'York et son accession au trône. Henri, qui est pourtant sous bonne garde, représente toujours une menace aux yeux du nouveau souverain.

Les années ont passé. À la cour, Édouard IV, roi d’Angleterre, se complaît dans la luxure. Georges, lui, est jaloux des terres octroyées à son frère Richard.

Georges, accablé de chagrin depuis le décès d’Isabelle, est victime d’un complot visant à le retirer définitivement de la liste des potentiels prétendants au trône.

Vexé que Richard lui ait visiblement caché un lourd secret, Buckingham se rapproche des Woodville.

Lorsqu’il découvre que lord Hastings s’entretient secrètement avec Élisabeth, Catesby est face à un dilemme : doit-il défendre son maître ou Richard ?

Alors que Richard écarte ses derniers ennemis, un comédien ambitieux n’hésite pas à se salir les mains pour se frayer un chemin vers la cour.

En dépit des meurtres récents, Richard maintient la fête qu’il avait organisée. Anne, de son côté, cherche à obtenir des réponses au sujet de son époux.

Le bruit court qu’Édouard de Middleham, comte de Salisbury, ne serait pas le fils du roi. Richard cherche un moyen de faire taire la rumeur.

Rumors circulate that Richard is not the rightful king. This story leads to the escape of Edward V, son of the previous king, and his brother from the Tower of London. Richard suffers from poor health as he prepares for his coronation in York. A medical examination by the imprisoned witch Jane suggests a certain possibility. With that in mind, Richard visits Buckingham's castle. There, Buckingham's love for Richard grows to the point where he takes unprecedented action. "I can no longer keep my cool with you around."

Buckingham, determined to rebel, tries to win the cooperation of Bishop Ely and Stanley. Meanwhile, Richmond advises his father-in-law Stanley of the conditions under which he will join the rebellion. Those conditions: The death of King Edward V and his brother, who are imprisoned in the Tower of London. Buckingham believes Richard III, and no one else, must commit the murders. At the same time, Richard enters York and waits for Buckingham, who is expected to come. However, after the coronation, Richard is visited by the assassin Tyrell.

With Buckingham in open rebellion, an anguished Richard turns toward Catesby. "If only I hadn't been so intimate with him. If only I wasn't the son of the devil..." But that was no longer an option. Leaving his wife Anne and son Edward behind, Richard sets out for battle. Richard III and Buckingham cross swords in the Forest of Dean, just as they promised. "I will cross the border and abandon my name. I will stand by your side and cut through your thorns until the day I die. That...and the loyalty to your father that still binds you..."

Just as Richard has personally seen to the end of Buckingham, Anne confesses that her tuberculosis has returned. Anne begs Richard to disinherit their kind-hearted son Edward in order to protect him. Facing the cruel fate of loved ones drifting away, Richard desperate enough for the departed Buckingham to try replacing him with Catesby. But Catesby says he cannot, for "the heat of the body cannot warm the soul." In the midst of this, the battle with Richmond approaches.

"If this name, if this blood, was all an illusion...then what is the point of this battle?" Richard looks back at his past, guided by Tyrell in front of him. "Let us go home, even if it is a battlefield where not even sleep is allowed to us..."
