李恒基（任达华），自小丧父，生长于渔村，与少女采云（周秀兰）青梅竹马。偶然机会，结识富家子郭英年（林嘉华），彼此一见如故。在年的影响下，基决定离开故乡，到都市闯一番事业。入城之前，他与云成婚，以便母亲有云照料。基闯天下，就从经营的士业务开始。得年相助，生意蒸蒸日上，不久便成小富，即接家人到市区同住。惜好景不常，基与年合资地产生意失败，两人联袂到澳门散心，不期邂逅淑女章思薇（刘雪华），薇明艳照人，两人不觉倾心。而薇亦为基之俊逸潇洒风度所吸引。可怜年不知薇已对基芳心暗许，还在一厢情愿地暗恋着她。薇虽可人，但基用情专一，明知家有妻室，未敢再言爱意，唯有用理智压抑感情，以防卷入爱情的漩涡。六七年香港暴动，时局纷乱，二人看准时机，合作投资地产买卖，以低价购入楼房地产。暴动结束，楼价暴涨，他们乘时高价出售物业，短短几年间便跻身巨富行列。另一方面，薇与基共事多年，常籍故亲近，表露爱意。基终抵不住爱的诱惑，冲破理智的束缚，让自己爱上薇。年却因此心怀不满，与叔父合作暗中排斥基。基与薇相恋，内心却是矛盾重重，他终不忍抛弃发妻，毅然与薇分手。年见有机可乘，再度向薇展开追求，凭着一片诚意，终于赢得美人归。可是婚后不久，年疑薇与基藕断丝连，薇大为愤怒，提出离婚，适股市大泻，年损失惨重，乃只身离港，逃避一切。年走后，薇与基旧情复炽，云亦明丈夫所爱并非自己，欲成全二人。不料忽传年死讯，薇自疚不已，提出与基分手。基闻讯怅然。
