Not off to a hot start for Strange New Worlds. This episode, following a clunky first one, is entertaining enough but man the plot makes no sense. Spoilers below.
Una turns out caused the whole thing which when you think about it for 5 seconds makes no sense. She even criticizes her lawyer for using her case to push her cause. Which it turns out was exactly what Una was doing.
Pike is cleared because he gave Una asylum. But is it asylum if no one was notified? Is it asylum if he himself didn't know he was doing that? Take that with the legal argument, "but the law is bad so it deserves to be broken" together sure sounds like a weak defense, say, of a former president would use when breaking the law.
A few other things: I did like all the lawyers. Pike's girlfriend just happening to be the prosecutor I actually liked. And the Vulcan working with her - and rubbing Spock the wrong way - might be a good recurring character. The defense lawyer was also played well (but her saving her defense for a surprise at the end of the trial is really not how trials work.) Personal logs: So apparently they're nearly impossible to be accessed by the courts. What is the purpose of Personal Logs? I mean obviously it's a tool on ST to tell important facts in the story. But why do characters actually have them? Is it just a personal journal? Is it for historical record? But they sure seem like even years later would violate the logger's privacy if they went public. And they're all stored on ship's servers. Can you image your work IT making you log your personnel stuff on their servers. To what end?
I'm getting a little nervous this show is heading toward every week a crew member ignoring Starfleet rules and regulations only to get a talking to at the end of the day. Una should have, imo, been put on probation, stripped of rank (at least for a time). But for her to get no punishment at all when last week Spock was told if he stole the Enterprise again he'd be booted from Starfleet seemed strange.
Una's flashback to childhood were really poor. I appreciate they left that to a minimum.
The doctor is certainly a very likable guy but I can't decide if he's actually a good character.
Pike's hair is not as amazing as last season.

Just happening? Like the prosecutor in the TOS episode "Court Martial" just happened to be Kirk's (ex-)girlfriend?
So far, still haven't heard any reason why I should waste a second of my life on SNW.
