Just finished S3.
When you watch a police procedural drama/murder mystery, you are expecting to see a "let-right-be-done" crew.
Well, there are no “above reproach” folks here. No one’s moral compass seems to point True-North!? If this was a drawing, and I had to shade in everyone according to their actions…we would be talking dim-gray-to-vantablack here!
Anyway...
Ona-Ariki, the lead actor is not someone I’ve seen before. I think he is great in the role...intense, ambiguous, flawed, and torn. (I couldn’t help but chuckle at his character’s detective skills. When it comes to catching the perpetrator, he seems to accuse “everyone in sight”. It got so bad that at one point I was afraid he was going to walk by a mirror, and go 'that guy'. ) I'll be checking out some of actor's other work.
Joel Tobeck is the reason I decided to check out the series. I’m a fan from his “Dr. Blake Mysteries” days. Anyway, another stellar performance from someone it’s a pleasure to see on screen. The actor can convey more with an ounce-of-facial expression, (especially that frown) than some actors can with a pound-of-dialogue.
Finally...
Going in, I thought the premise would be too hard to keep up in a weekly series, but, it works. I think strong supporting players, with intertwining subplots not directly “attached” to the Bridge storyline, makes the difference. Also, switching out some of the lead players, while keeping others (and their back stories) was a big part of the draw.
Bottomline: Enjoyed it immensely…wouldn’t mind seeing more.
