The Movie Database Support Forum

Hello!

It seems that the entire 1940 original Tom and jerry series is missing.

Can someone fix this? thank you!

EDIT: I can see now that the individual episodes are categorized as movies! Can someone reorganize them into episodes of the 1940 season?

EDIT 2: https://thetvdb.com/series/tom-and-jerry/seasons/official/1940

The Tom & Jerry short movies were initilally broadcasted in movie theaters. As such, they should be listed as separate movies in the movie part of our database.

The fact that TVDB group them as a series has nothing to do with the way we list them here. Each site has its own set of rules.

Oh my god. nobody on this planet would search for the classic Tom and Jerry cartoons as movie, only because they where originally shown on movie theaters. These cartoons were not the main movies, just interlude. I bed no other movie and tv show database on the internet list each of these cartoons as independent movies. The episodes are not even organized in a set here. Does not macht with the rules, I bet.

German clerks are freethinker compared with the Mods and Admins where.

The old Tom & Jerry shorts most definitely all were individual free-standing films. And, yes: Even IMDb lists them all as such.

Same goes for the shorts of such long-running franchises as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Popeye, Betty Boop, etc.

So how should one organize the HD re-release of "Tom and Jerry Golden Collection"? Shouldn't it be a series? Something like this? https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/204256-tom-and-jerry-golden-collection-volume-1

No, they shouldn't be organised as a TV series. I have deleted the series you have started. They have been originally released as short movies that are listed separately in the movies part of our database.

The only grouping that can be done is a movie entry per volume of the DVD collection with the "video" attribute set to "yes", like this one.

So, just to be clear, since you say that each Tom & Jerry episode is considered a short movie, can every volume of a given collection that is currently listed as a movie in the TMDB database (like each volume of the Classic Collection, for example) be converted to a collection so that the individual Tom & Jerry "movies" can be added to each volume?

Volume 1 of the Classic Collection appears to have 24 movies included counting both sides, for example, as you can see here, and it would be nice if each individual movie could be added to each volume for organizational purposes. It would be a similar concept to how all of the Fast & Furious movies are listed under The Fast and Furious Collection, except each "collection" would be a single volume from the Tom and Jerry Classic Collection with the separate short movies added to each of them.

This way, the Tom & Jerry short movies could remain as movies, nobody would need to create a separate series page, and all of the short movies could be consolidated under collections (volumes) rather than having them all separate.

Not sure if others feel this way, but what I think Infuse users like myself just want to avoid is having 161 separate Tom & Jerry movies in their library that they'll have to sift through every single time. This way, only the 6 collections (volumes) of the Tom & Jerry Classic Collection would show up in our libraries and have all the separate movies listed under them.

Exactly. That’s why I posted my question in the first place. I had to remove the “Episodes” from my library due to how much space they take on the movies list. Hopefully they can be organized into collections like your suggestion so I’m able to add them back!

So, I went through and read TMDB's "Collection Bible" and I'm pretty sure they're going to come back and say it's not allowed due to this absurd rule:

"While sometimes controversial, collections are not intended to be a way of grouping movies of the same universe, person, character or theme, or imitating box sets. We recommend using lists for content not allowed as a collection."

So in case the TMDB mods decide to say no and reference that rule, I found a workaround through Infuse. It’s a pain in the a** but it's still better than the alternative of having 161 separate movies in your Infuse library, at least in my opinion.

Turns out that Infuse now supports custom collections— they talk about it here a bit on the Firecore blog/forum. I tried it out for Tom & Jerry specifically and it looks like it works, so in your library all the T&J episodes (…ahem… movies) will all be consolidated under the custom collection. Looks like this feature was just added a couple of months ago!

Here are the steps on how to make the collection:

  1. You can either do this one episode at a time (what I’m doing) or add them all at once, but add the episode files to whichever media folder that Infuse is pulling from, like you’d add anything else. Make sure the file name is correct so it pulls the correct metadata from the movie listed on TMDB. The file name for episode 1 of Tom & Jerry is Puss_Gets_the_Boot(1940).mkv for example.
  2. In Infuse, right click on the title you just added (you’ll see it under Recently Added) and click ‘Collections.’
  3. Click ‘Create Collection’ and name it whatever you want. Then be sure to click the check box to add the episode to the collection.
  4. Repeat steps 1 and 2, but just add the rest of the episodes to the new collection you just created in step 3. Make sure to add the episodes to the collection in order so that they display in order.
  5. You should see the new collection under the ‘All Movies’ section in Infuse with the separate episodes listed under it. No more clutter.

Not perfect, but definitely better than nothing. Hope this helps!
