Maybe a mod can give a more precise answer, but I think popularity is a current number based on long-term aggregated favorite data, while trending (today or this week) is a change in popularity over a much shorter period of time (analogous to IMDb's popularity graph that shows recent uptick/downtick in popularity, although perhaps calculated somewhat differently).
