Служба підтримки The Movie Database

Hey,

I cannot seem to figure out how to add a translation for a movie which doesn't have that translation. For example I want to add a en-GB translation but I cannot find any way to do that.

Any guidance would be appreciated, thanks!

Okay so I'm able to add translations for other languages by changing the language argument in the request, e.g.) https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/10406-encino-man/edit?active_nav_item=primary_facts&language=de-AT

However while it allows me to add two different types of German, it won't let me add a different English translation i.e.) https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/10406-encino-man/edit?active_nav_item=primary_facts&language=en-GB <- This just redirects me back to the en-US page.

Is there some specific reason for this?

I know alternate titles exist but they're not useful as there is so much junk data in those fields.

Is there some specific reason for this?

TMDb only has one English translation, en-US. Only a couple of languages have an alternative translation (French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Chinese, Arabic).

Thanks for clarifying, I'm just a bit confused as to why there are multiple options presented via the api: https://api.themoviedb.org/3/configuration/primary_translations

  "en-AU",
  "en-CA",
  "en-GB",
  "en-IE",
  "en-NZ",
  "en-US",

Is this possibly a bug or should I no longer be using this that api endpoint?

I'm not familiar with the API, but the primary translations are explained here. They appear to be the many translations supported on the website, but there are fewer options available for the data (i.e. movie, TV, collection and people entries).

This theme, Languages and Countries, is in fact a little confusing.

A Country with Multiple Languages
In this case, if the language is only spoken in this country,
then it is probably possible to create a Translation of the Movie/TV Show/Profile.

CA Canada 2 (en+fr)
CN China 2 (cn+zh)
IN India 5 (hi+kn+ml+ta+te)
NO Norway 2 (nb+no)
ES Spain 4 (ca+es+eu+gl)

But...

A Language with Multiple Countries
In this case, only a few localization variations exist,
or it is possible to have several Translations, for the same Language, one for each country.
I'm not sure about some cases, but I think it is.
These cases, I believe, are possible:

ar Arabic 2 (AE+SA)
de German 3 (AT+CH+DE)
fr French 3 (CA+CH+FR) only CA and FR
ms Malay 2 (MY+SG)
zh Mandarin 3 (CN+HK+TW)
pt Portuguese 2 (BR+PT)
es Spanish 2 (ES+MX)

These cases, I believe, are not possible.

en English 6 (AU+CA+GB+IE+NZ+US) default= US
it Italian 2 (CH+IT) default= IT

EDIT
With Banana corrections

Looks like the list of API translations being returned isn't using the correct list. There's the valid list of website translations, and then a list of blocked translations that we don't allow media to be translated as (en-CA, en-GB, etc...)

I'll get the correct list pushed out to the API. As it so happens, I am just working in this area today so I know exactly why this is happening.

Thanks for taking a look at this! The description on that api endpoint is a bit ambiguous so it would be nice knowing which translations are available for what.

Ya, it's supposed to be a list of translations that can be used for translating the media, not the list of translations the website supports.

Just a follow up question while you're looking at this api - because there is no way to have multiple English translations there doesn't seem to be a good way of getting regional titles for certain movies.

For example "Encino Man" is the en-US title but in non-US English speaking countries it's called "California Man". I know Alternative titles exist but because it seems you can have almost an unlimited amount of these per country without any real context for why that alternate exists it's impossible to make a decision on which one to use (See https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/206647-spectre/titles?language=en-US for example which has 4 alternative titles for en-US). Any good ways to get around this now?

No way around it right now, but I've been thinking of opening up the en-CA and en-GB variants since the whole system is a lot more mature than it used to and doesn't have as many limitations as it used to.
