The Movie Database-ondersteuning

As a native Spanish, and a Spanish teacher, I would like to contribute to improving the translation of the "genres" section:

  • Family-> Familia / Familiar
    "Familia" is a correct translation, but to refer to the genre of cinema, the most correct is "Familiar"
  • Music -> Música / Musical
    "Música" is a correct translation, but to refer to the genre of cinema, the most correct is "Musical"
  • Romance -> Romance / Romántico
    "Romance" is a correct translation, but to refer to the genre of cinema, the most correct is "Romántico"
  • TV Movie -> Película de TV / Telefilme/ Telefilm
    "Película de TV" is a correct translation, but it has no real use. The word used by Spanish speakers is "Telefilm", and according to the 'Royal Academy of Spanish' the most correct word in Spanish is "Telefilme"

The rest of the genres I think have a good translation in general, and are understandable.

I hope I have been able to help improve the Spanish version.

Hi @rubenleobcn, I believe the issue here is that our genres don't support regional variants, so we don't have any way of separating es-ES from es-MX. I have an open ticket to look at this here, but and will try to find some time in the near future to complete it.

Thank you very much Travis for your attention and your quick response!

I'm not sure about the answer, and I've consulted with some friends on the subject, and we see that there has been confusion. I apologize, because I have expressed myself incorrectly.

When I said Spanish, I was not referring to Spain, I was speaking the Spanish language globally, and not about regional variants.

I have seen that previously, 'Thriller' was corrected for 'Suspense' and 'War' for 'Belico'. My comment goes in the same direction.

On the one hand, a minor correction, which is not very important: In the Spanish language, the genres of films are adjectives, and that is why I proposed 'Musical', 'Familiar' and 'Romántico' as the best translation.

On the other hand, the current literal translation of TV Movie, 'Película de tv', is not something that is said in Spanish language, it is like saying 'the movie for television'. In Spanish language, both in Spain, Mexico or Argentina, 'Telefilme' is used.

Thank you for your work!

I agree with Rubén, in most cases genres in Spanish are used as adjectives, although 'Romance' is used too. When it comes to 'TV Movie', it's always 'Telefilme', I've never seen this genre referred to as 'Película de televisión'.
