Are we not supposed to be able to view some large images on Google images like this in full resolution (here is the search URL) or am I missing something (i.e. being stupid)?
You can view (and save) HQ images on google (and many other sites) using Imagus plugin for Chrome. I tried it and it works for the both of your links. Also you can make your own filters using regex for the sites that aren't supported by default (regexr.com is a good place to test them). More about it on its reddit page or in this TMDB thread, where I was advised to use it by Elizabeth Jennings.
Just a casual word of warning about IMDb. Images there are sometimes upscaled, so always make sure to check that the final image looks good. I was tricked myself a few times so now I always take an extra look.
All credit belongs to Elizabeth Jennings who gave me this excellent tip
As for your question. Imagus plugin basically tries to find a better version of the image you hover with your mouse over (I personally changed the Imagus settings to show me larger image only when pressing Ctrl key) by:
Looking for the image URL link refers to (i.e. saving you from clicking on each image to get a full version)
So yes, Imagus will always try to get you the best resolution it can (as predefined by regex filters for each site), but for the sites, where there isn't any regex filter predefined, Imagus won't help you (but you can try to guess the right formula and set the regex filter by yourself).

You're not supposed to. I think the pictures comes from the Guardian article: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/dec/11/the-pass-review-fails-escape-stage-origins-russell-tovey-john-donnelly but original format is no longer available (or at least I couldn't find a link with the right key).

@talestalker That's GREAT.
Will it always give you the full resolution (or are there exceptions)?

Huh. I use Imagus too, but the two Google images links aren't working for me.
