Just making sure... if the opening credits for a movie says "Company X Presents a Company Z Production", that means that X is the company responsible for distribution while Z is the company responsible for the production of the film? And hence, we should remove X if someone has added it to the "Production Companies" section in an entry here on TVDb, and add Z instead?

This might help.
Note that sometimes the same company (e.g., Paramount) may offer production and/or distribution services, depending on the project.

Yes. We add the company z. We also do not add the “with support from” companies. (Thats no production. Mostly just financing).

Just to make sure, you mean "Yes. We add the company z...AND do not add company X"? (i.e. remove any company X, added as a production company for a film/series, where the credits say "Company X Presents a Company Z production"?
Or, are you, by omission, saying that you can be sure to add company Z but when it comes to company X, you need to research that more?

I look at the producer credits whenever I have doubts. If at least one of the producer is credited, I feel like it's safe to add as a production company. Does that make sense?

Ahh...no?
Do you mean you check the on-screen credits (at the beginning or end of the film) and see if there is at least one person given the "producer/produced by" credit that works at that production company?
Or do you mean you check the on-screen credits (at the beginning or end of the film) to see if the production company is given the "produced by" credit? (In that case, your answer is basically "Do not add company X, only add company Z" because I'm already making the assumption that there is no such on-screen credit made- only "company X presents a company Z production").

Yes, that's what I meant.

Typically the "presenting" company is only tangentially involved in the project; and often the reason they are seeking a "presenting" credit is so that their name is publicized and becomes more recognizable as a "player" in the industry. It also helps established companies remain "top of mind" to their audience, even if they had very little to do w/production or distribution.

Yes exactly! Thats why we do not add it! Its just another form of marketing in general.

Sometimes it gets almost ridiculous, such as w/the film "Shutter Island".
Production Companies:
Paramount Pictures (presents) (A Martin Scorsese Picture)
Phoenix Pictures (as A Phoenix Pictures Production)
Sikelia Productions (in association with)
Appian Way (in association with)

Up until now I have been misremembering what you said in this reply as: "We also do not add the "in association with" companies"". I guess in my head those two were interchangeable. Which is a dumb mistake, my bad.
So, don't add "with support from" or "funded by" companies but yes to "in association with" companies? Or was I right, that we don't add "in association with"?

I think I made the exact same mistake in the last weeks/months because I mis-remembered this post. Please don't tell the other moderators - they're going to kill me ... oops ...

Well, what would be nice is if there was a similar function for account's edits as there is for the edits/changes made entries on TMdb; some fuction where you can filter specific things when you view your account's edits. This way, I can easily go back through all the entries where I removed a production company, and check if they were one of those "in association with" companies.
Right now, the best way I can go about fixing those mistakes I may have made is looking through the private list I made for things I've contributed to (one for tv and movie). But that would mean having t sift through all of them to find the few that I've deleted production companies from.

I think in association with is fine (Produced by COMPANY X in association with COMPANY Y). unless it's COMPANY X presents in association with COMPANY Y as COMPANY X production, then I wouldn't add it.
I've seriously seen both versions!!!
I think it would be just amazing if you could add notes like IMDb. That way we can properly add all companies correctly, wether it's presenting, producing, associating (LOL), supporting, or funding!

Lol, I get it, but that sounds confusing. If that's an important thing to maintain in the db, then shouldn't it be added to the bible?
Yeah.

FYI, the name of the investment group or company that financed a substantial part of the property is usually credited as "in association with." They may have had nothing else to do w/the property's production.
