Hi Riki,
Where do these images come from? Are they from the studios or content owners, or are they just user made?

Can you post me an example?
I'm open to supporting content from content owners but have resisted doing user made stuff in the past. Is anyone other than Sony doing it?

Ok, let me think about this. We have some contacts with some other content owners as well and can see if they've thought about or do support these as well. Unless there's some decent coverage it might not be worth the effort, but I will look into it and see.

As a developer in my opinion it should be implemeted adding .gif as image and a category named motion-poster, please tell me if I can help you smoehow just to speed up alittle bit the process.
Thank you very much.

I know that the recent beauty and the beast adaption with Emma watson had motion posters added to youtube. I added them to the video section as clips.

Most of these animated posters (cinemagraphs) have a really low quality or a low resolution, because of the GIF compression and a limited color palette, and are just too big for what they offer.
Don't you think that APNG or WebP/WebM files would be better formats for these kind of posters?

That's largely why I was asking about the source. I don't have much interest in supporting something that isn't official so I would just choose what is being released by the studios. If they have other formats to consider than I am definitely ok to chat about it.

If thinking about nearest future and taking some sense into account, the best variant for both content providers and users would be to use SVG format combined with traditional image. The providers could create highly attractive posters, while the conservative users or those having old hardware or those having weak eyes may one-click to disable various flash-boom-bangs.

I heard back from NBC Universal, Warner Brothers and Fox and none of them are making these assets right now. It seems the only one really making them is Sony. Given the lack of industry support it's probably not something I'll invest time in right now.
Most of them did point me over to these style assets though, which are not at all the same as motion posters but still kind of neat:
Creating our own format from scratch is probably too much work for the community to get behind. There's also the legal side of it which I'd just prefer not to worry about right now. I have too many other things going on. I would like to see about proper square image support though

Yes, he did. I heard back from NBC Universal, Warner Brothers and Fox and they are not creating those assets right now. I was pointing out that the other style images are being supported by most studios.
