The Movie Database Support

I was following the other thread covering how various parts of the site use translations, and I have a couple of questions. (I apologize in advance if they are stupid questions.)

How are these translations accomplished for site content? I'm assuming it's too much for humans to do all of it. Is there a translation software package/algorithm that is used for this? And if so, would it be possible to apply translations to forum messages, so they appear to users in their preferred language and English-only users don't have to struggle to try to answer questions that are posted in a non-English language?

forum messages are never translated I'm afraid :(

Sometimes I use Google Translate for the messages in the Content Issues section, and then answer in English. most of the times users then continue on in English, which is a big help. But I never like those German/French etc reports. XD

Hi @ZurichGnome,

How are these translations accomplished for site content?

Everything on TMDb is 100% user added/contributed. There's no automatic process or anything.

In the case of forum messages, the "chrome" around the forum supports translations just like the rest of the site but the messages themselves do not. There's no concept of translations for discussions.

There's some browser plugins/extensions that can translate sites on the fly for you. Chrome does this built in for example, and that would be my recommendation for anyone wanting this. The forums are predominantly English, especially the support forums but that is primarily by design. I am the only one providing official company support (even though I get lots of help from moderators and users alike) but I only speak English.

Travis, thanks for the Chrome extension info. I found it and added it. Here's the link to the free plugin (it's at the top of the list on that page) for anyone who uses the Chrome browser. That version is for English translations from other languages. I think there are probably versions in other major languages in the Chrome store as well.

Happy to hear!
