Does the site actually indicate what API fields actually represent and what are the likely values?

e.g. Gender has been added since I last looked.

I am assuming: 0 = None set 1 = Female 2 = Male

I am also assuming that the gender field under /movie/{movie_id}/credits is the same as under /person/{person_id}

e.g. in the film Hairspray (2007), John Travolta play Edna Turnblad. That is a man, playing a character that is a woman. For that character, the gender is specified as being 2. e.g. Male.

So, does gender in those two locations always relate to the gender of the actor, rather than the character?

Also, is there a non-binary value? 3? For people like Asia Kate Dillon, who is currently listed as being female.

I am not actually championing any value or approach, I am just trying to work out whether the gender value is unique to the character or just reflects the actor and whether there are more values than 0, 1 and 2.

Thanks.

Hi Adi,

You are correct.

  • 0 - Not set / not specified
  • 1 - Female
  • 2 - Male

So, does gender in those two locations always relate to the gender of the actor, rather than the character?

Always the actor, we do not currently store the character gender.

Also, is there a non-binary value? 3? For people like Asia Kate Dillon, who is currently listed as being female.

No, we would set it to 0 if they don't want to be identified as male or female.

Cheers.

When you added the Gender functionality, was there a blog post about it or something?

e.g. I really ought to be looking there, rather than asking here. I did a quick Google, but nothing obvious came up. It is the sort of thing I ought to bookmark!

Heh, I don't think I ever really announced that feature. It was added to the website back in Feb. 2016 (almost 2 years ago). The API got it in March 2016, about 4 weeks later.

People also got social links back in June of this year (both website and API). Movies and TV shows got them on the website at the same time, but the fields haven't made it to the API yet. It's close to the next thing I am doing.

There's also the new "known for" field that is available on the website but hasn't made it's way to the API yet.

I try to post bigger features on the blog but don't always find the time.

Thanks. I have bookmarked it.
