The Movie Database Support

Lately, whenever I first arrive at the site and click on a new notification, I get the following error message: "Oops!—We can't find the page you're looking for. You tried to request a page that doesn't seem to exist. If you believe this to be in error, let us know on the forums."

So I click on the notification bell at the top right of that error notification page, and it takes me to the proper thread. This seems to happen every time I first arrive here lately. I'm using Google Chrome browser.

Well, that means the discussion was deleted. In the case of that Harry Potter discussion we were both a part of, the original poster deleted it.

Which is super annoying, we were contributing useful information that is useful for many more people than just those taking part in the actual discussion.

I have some plans to not let users delete posts after they get a reply. This has already been brought up but got kind of shuffled to the side. I've now re-prioritized it and will get it done this week.

This one bugs me in particular because I took extra time out of my day to build the data I added in that post, and it's just gone. unamused

Travis, thanks so much for your detailed reply. I agree, this OP-delete feature really bugs everyone who takes the time to add to the thread, and it just isn't fair--especially on those threads that are long and interesting/helpful, where people have spent time doing research and adding a lot of info.

I hope you can maybe bump this fix up in priority, because it's so demoralizing, and it discourages people from adding to threads if the thread can just be vaporized by the OP.

Yeah, that really sucks. I also did some research and contributed to the now-deleted thread to offer a correction to the OP's comment. I'm thinking the OP just doesn't like being corrected in public. Thin-skinned and selfish.

I agree w/PT 100 that this should be dealt with sooner rather than later, because it has such a negative impact on posters who want to contribute helpful info, only to have it wiped out by a peevish OP. I don't usually attack others like this, but in this case I think it's deserved, because the reason the OP deleted the thread is obvious and petty.

Oh great!! I lost content issue reports research a few times and it wasn't fun. robot

Well, you can bet that I'm not going to delete this thread that I started! wink

And after the fix, I wish it were possible to resurrect that deleted thread, so that it could live again. But I guess maybe that's not possible?

I've just pushed an update that removes the ability for users to delete discussions once they have a reply. ok_hand_tone2

Re: restoring, not a practical way to do it, no. I would have to create a temporary DB server and do a full DB restore from a few days ago, then move over the one discussion. That's just too much work I'm afraid wink

Yay! Travis, thank you so much for changing the policy so quickly. It will be a huge relief to so many contributors.
