The Movie Database support

Yesterday i added 2 tv pilots that were green lighted to series, Black Lightning and The Resident which was listed here but someone deleted "The Resident", Why? I contribute to IMDb too, I have added over 720 titles there and I find this very disrespectful. If you are going to delete people's stuff, then this site is not for me, pathetic really. It takes a while to work on each of the titles and for it to be deleted without even giving a reason is downright insulting. I was about to add more today but I don't think i will anymore.

Edit: I also noticed that the rogue admin Paszt also tagged Black Lightning as a PILOT, I'm sorry but I pretty much look over all the TV pilots and new TV series title on IMDb and Black Lightning has been picked to series, can someone tell her to stop abusing her rights ( I assume it was her who deleted it), Abusive admins are not good for sites, any sites.

Just wanted to say I totally agree with your comments. I think the system of making updates and overwriting others really needs to be addressed and locked down.

I was making a number of edits after joining here but after experiencing similar issues without getting any definitive answers on dealing with this rogue issue I decided just to give up...

"checks and balances" really, everyone has to be accountable for their edits/contributions and even admins/mods have to be held accountable especially since they are not elected by people but merely selected by the owner of this site..Too much emphasis on how many edits/contribs a person makes here a month instead of the quality of their contributions. If you are against people contributing to this site, why not lock it? (read only) we don't get paid to contribute here (or at other sites where i contribute to including imdb and wikipedia) [atleast i assume the mods here are not paid either], most of us do it because we want to so please at the very best, provide a reason for deleting or removing something via e-mail, I didn't even know it was deleted, i randomly checked it because i wanted to add an image/screenshot which was released by the channel and i realized that the page was missing. I have been doing this (on wikipedia and Imdb for a decade now [11 years to be precise] ) and to have your contribs removed by someone who has no knowledge of films and tv shows is quite insulting. Still hoping for a reply from Paszt and Travis on this..

I doubt Travis van provide and answer for other peoples actions, but I do hope you'll get an explanation.

I think we only should add the brand-new "pilot" status after it's definitely cancelled/not picked up. (That was also the reasoning behind the creation of the new status...) Not just after news of a new show gets out. Then we can keep changing show statuses from production > pilot > continuing ..

I've even seen people change a show status from continuing to production when it's getting a new season D: (which is probably just an honest mistake though)

yeah i found that part odd too, when i added black lightning , the only option i could see that would relate was "Returning Series" though i can see mods getting a "In Production" option which i did not see, I think we should borrow settings from IMDb which is something like

  • "Development" - generally for scripts
  • "Announced" - A new project which is announced but may take a few years to actually be made
  • "Script" - A new Project which has a script but its not the final script and may be worked on
  • "Announced" - A Project given the greenlight to go into production
  • "Pre-Production" - A New Project which has gone into early production and is currently casting
  • "Filming" - This one is obvious
  • "Post-Production - A Project which has completed Principal photography, but there is not yet a finished print; editing, effects, scoring, etc is still happening (may take months to even a year)
  • "Completed" - The Project is finished and is now awaiting a distributor/release date etc
  • "Released" - It has either aired on TV, in cinemas or released on video or online.

Movies have the status "Rumored", so that shouldn't be a requirement for TV shows. As OP mentioned the series were greenlit and should go over to production thereby.

Just means the site needs better "help tips" for these things.

@Warpath
Your posts do contain some irony but anyways:
IMDB is more respectful..? I highly doubt that. There is no transparency at all in the submission process from what I've seen so far... It is also terribly slow and tedious which isn't the case here at all. I do however agree that it happens more than enough that stuff gets moderated wrongly (I've made more than enough rant posts about that)... but this is also a direct result of a lot more contributions given the openness of the database. I would definitly not wish for a system like IMDB here but maybe something similar to discogs could help? Clear change history with versions, options to vote them correct and a discussion page for them. You can also describe for periodic updates about changes on entries you contributed to.

As for Paszt, yes he frequently makes questionable moves (in the cases where I suspected him) but in the volume he's moderating and contributing not the end of the world.

Wait, you see different statuses then these?

http://prntscr.com/f71lej

I think all those are working, the ones you list are maybe a bit too detailed, and it can switch around a lot. We'd need to update the status constantly, and it can be very difficult to find trustworthy sources to verify for those statuses.

@sp1ti yeah, indeed, I wasn't saying it should be Pilot (saying it was added for series that were cancelled/not picked up after a pilot, like some Amazon pilots, to not have them all in the movie database :-P), I think it should be Production indeed, based on Warpath's info! :)

We don't want Development and Script. And, personally, I think the Rumored setting we currently have should be removed as well. When there is solid information that a movie is going to be made, then add the movie to the database (planned). Or, to be 100 percent sure, wait until the movie actually starts shooting (in production). I keep having to delete entries with no new information for years. Those most eager to add such entries are usually people with websites about possible upcoming movies. So no more encouragement is needed for them.

One example was a 2012 (or maybe earlier than that) interview with Robert Rodriguez where he talked about some movies he wanted to make and suddenly 10 (or so) new RR movies had to be added. It's just pointless and extra work for us to delete the projects when they eventually do not happen. Sorry for sounding grumpy, but it is really annoying. grin

(And, to be fair, it's a small issue compared to other problems, but I wanted to get my opinion out anyhow.)

(I hope the original issue is resolved as well. Travis would have to get involved I guess.)

Yeah i don't think this site needs Rumoured, Development and Scripts but since mods here remove "upcoming tv series"[In Production], I'm not sure what really is allowed but what i gave above is the real setting for how shows/movies are added to IMDb, there is no need to accept the top 3 options but the remainder are important though simplifying "Pre-Production/Filming/Post-Production" into a simple "In-Production" was not a bad idea.

@sp1ti I didn't say IMDb is more respectful, but they do have checks and balances, if some data you added did not show up, you can always check the receipt and find out why it was not accepted, there is no receipt or a contribution history option here so if i add a new show or movie to TmdB, i add it to my 'favorites' here as there is no other way to track them, i don't even know if some other show i added before was deleted too, i don't check here very often. Still waiting for a reply from whoever deleted it and possibly Travis, btw, it would be nice if you guys had an IRC channel maybe on freenode/Discord where things can get discussed as well (a support channel).

I can't say I understand why "The Resident" was deleted and I also hope @Paszt can explain their reasons if it wasn't a mistake.

@Warpath I think you have highlighted the need for, at the very least, a notification system when an entry is removed. It would benefit both regular users and mods. We can't send emails every time we delete an entry, it's too time-consuming. I think Travis already said that's something he could build in the future.

Mods usually are regular users nominated by other mods based on the quality of their edits. We don't get paid or have any kind of advantage, but it takes a lot of our time and we face the wrath of frustrated contributors. It's kind of a shitty job. smile_cat

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, we usually have more experience and a better handle on the guidelines that the average contributor. We often make good edits other contributors do not understand or agree with and it can be very frustrating for both sides. I'm still hoping the upcoming contribution bible will make things easier in that regard. I also agree with @sp1ti that better help tips could be very useful.

Most of the time @Paszt's contributions are good, but we all make mistakes. I know I wouldn't want to be judged based on my worse edits.(For the record, I think both "pilot" and "returning series" were the wrong choice.) "Rogue" edits is a separate and sensitive issue, though.

4 days on, and still no word from our "benevolent" leader (a joke name we have for our wikipedia leader too) and Paszt ...while going through paszt's edits, i realize he/she/it likes to add new series too so its obvious he/she/it deleted it out of spite.. I added 9 more new series and now waiting to see which one is deleted first. Other mods here, question, if something is deleted, can it be restored or do you have to do it all over again?

Well, Travis I understand, he's on vacation for a week :)

I'm afraid deletations can't be restored (I accidentally deleted the original profile of some director a while back, instead of the copy which I emptied out! :(((), but looking in your changelog can be a big help, because there all the edits still appear! Including the image links you uploaded (you just gotta change the url of an existing backdrop or poster, and edit the random alphanumeric string at the end.

I'm sure changelogs don't exist for deleted pages (maybe only the mods have access to that cause i can't see it in my account section) .If you have a system where a deleted page cannot be restored then its usually not a good idea to give out the ability to delete stuff to people than have a tendency to not "respond" .. I'll see if Travis when he comes back from his holidays deals with this and maybe he has a magic button that can restore stuff easily cause with all the bugs this site has, its quite irritating to add stuff here.

Oh no, I meant your own changelog! If you remember which day, it's maybe easier to navigate back to that time! It'll just say instead of the series name, "This entry was deleted" or something like it though, but the edits still appear!

Oh yeah, its there, you would think that there would be a way to re-create it from deleted data logs, I made lot of edits to that page (40ish i think) including the backdrop, hopefully, travis has a magic button and hopefully that rogue admin keeps away from my other title addition in the meantime grin

Also, now i know why most of the shows i add have "returning series" on it, it gets changed to that on its own, i figured out if you change tabs whilst you are editing the "Primary Fact" section of a title without clicking the Save button, there is a very good chance that the Tv show status will automatically get changed to either "Pilot" or "Returning Series"..maybe it just happens to me but if u select "In-Production" option and click save after it, it doesn't happen. There is a javascript bug there somewhere..

edit: eeek, recent activity of paszt shows me that he/she/it is going through my additions eyes and deleting most of the backdrops i added angry and has also moved 3 of the show i added that will air between July and the the end of this year to the end of Next year and has "locked" the dates preventing me from fixing it, This is indeed abuse and if @Travis does not remove her/his/it (what is the use of the gender option in settings if it does not display on userpages?) Mods rights, then honestly this site is no better than all the other similar sites.

Maybe you can try other forms to contact Travis https://www.themoviedb.org/about/staying-in-touch, I'm sure he will look into this when he is back
