We'd like to be able to show the breakdown of male vs female in many areas, such as being able to generate most-watched Actors and Actresses automatically based on film views (instead of just a single list of Actors). A gender field on the person object would make this possible and is preferable to us layering this on at our end (and presumably then crowd-sourcing the data from our members).

Hey Matthew,
Yup, this one is being tracked as well (ticket #434). This one is easier and probably something I could get done sooner rather than later.

Cool, thanks. With all the interest in Women in Film, seems like something that would be well received!

Genders has been pushed live on the website. This will make its way to the API in a few days.

Might it be worth having an "Other" option instead of just Male/Female/unset?

Curious, is there really a difference between "other" and "unspecified"? What I mean specifically I guess is the "-" is just a label, which I could change. So what I am wondering is, is the idea of an "other" or "not specified" gender any different? Those feel the same to me. If a person doesn't want to share a specific gender then that's fine but we would still only need 3 options. Thoughts, ideas?

Yes, on reflection that makes sense. At least you are offering the third option! If the field had to mandatorily be Male or Female that might present more of a problem.

The only downside is that it's not possible to tell the difference between "this field is not set" and "this field is purposefully set to unspecified".

Just a reminder: Maybe think of to make a field for relatives like suggested before
