Hello,

Is it possible to improve the list of values for (french) certification field (when adding a french release on a movie) to have something more suitable for french users?

In France, a distribution certificate must be obtained prior to showing a movie in theaters. The certification values are:

U – valid for all audiences

12 – unsuitable for children younger than 12 or forbidden in cinemas for under 12

16 – unsuitable for children younger than 16 or forbidden in cinemas for under 16

18 – unsuitable for adults younger than 18 or forbidden in cinemas for under 18

The certification 10 (unsuitable for children younger than 10) is only used for TV and it's not official. Each television channel decide itself to add it or not when they broadcast the movie.

For every classification a warning ("avertissement") information could be added by the CNC and every theaters must display it. This warning is very important for U certification because even if the movie is rated U it could contains some scenes that may be disturbing to young children and sensitive people. For example AMERICAN SNIPER is rated U with warning in France. Movies rated U + warning are most of the time rated 10 when broadwasted on television. Warning information could be added to any classification (U; 12; 16; 18) for example 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE is rated 12 + warning, THE RAID 2 is rated 16 + warning.

The best solution would be to keep only U;12;16;18, remove 10 certification, and add an extra field to store the warning if it exists but if it's a too complex update we could use the following values:

U – valid for all audiences

U +w – valid for all audiences with warning

12 – unsuitable for children younger than 12

12 +w – unsuitable for children younger than 12 with warning

16 – unsuitable for children younger than 16

16 +w – unsuitable for children younger than 16 with warning

18 – unsuitable for adults younger than 18

18 +w – unsuitable for children younger than 18 with warning

And for movies that currently have the 10 certification, I think you could migrate the data to use U +w.

Thanks & regards, Julien

Hi,

Did you have a look at my proposal to improve french certification?

Thanks

I know there's already an existing thread with localised ratings, but on the internet, I couldn't find anything about ratings + warning. Wikipedia also doesn't list it; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_picture_content_rating_system#France https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_content_rating_systems#France

Only this wikia, but they don't list any sources; http://rating-system.wikia.com/wiki/French_Movie_Rating_System

And it seems like the French rating is actually prepended by a dash, (dunno if that's already implemented by TMDb). so -10 (for TV); -12, -16 and -18. See wikipedia images of the ratings, and this article for example;
http://variety.com/2016/film/global/france-movie-ratings-1201737635/

In France, the distribution certificate (mandatory for theaters) is devilered by the CNC (http://www.cnc.fr/web/fr/rechercher-une-oeuvre). The CNC is a public administrative organization. They use the U/12/16/18 system (http://www.cnc.fr/web/en/film-classification) and could add a "warning information" with the certificate, that every theaters must display. IMDb use also the U/U (with warning)/12/12 (with warning)/16/16 (with warning)/18/18 (with warning) system, example: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2265171/parentalguide?ref_=tt_stry_pg#certification

Yeah, I know the ratings are good, but there's no official information about the warning part, I can't find it on the site at least. Maybe I'm looking in a wrong place?

It only lists; "Films may also be classified by the order of the Minister of Culture as "pornographic films or those containing an incitement to violence" (article 12 of the act of 30 December 1975).

As from 1 January 1976, the list of pornographic films and those containing an incitement to violence is drawn up on the recommendation of the Board of Film Classification. These films are not permitted to benefit from any financial support in the form of automatic selective aid."

Maybe that's the warning part, but it doesn't state that.

Oh and I found the original topic; https://www.themoviedb.org/talk/534413860e0a263a0200229b

Maybe we don't find an official information about the warning part because it's not an information on the certificate. Maybe it's an additional information and it's documented for french cinema policies, I will try to search about this "warning" information. But the U/12/16/18 certificate is not enough for french users. For example "Logan" is "12 with warning", the "warning" information is something important to evaluate the "12" certificate for this movie :)

Well, I don't know, I think people just gotta look that up if they want to know more.

For example for the Dutch ratings, they also list different icons together with the age (like 16 + icon of a fist to indicate violence, and icon of a syringe to indicate drug use and an icon with feet to indicate sex), we don't add that stuff too. At least not in the current set-up.

And there's still the thing that I can't find anything at all about the use of "warning" hehe. (also, in my opinion warning says nothing still. It's already a warning in itself. But WHY warning? Because of violence, bad words, sex? I think nothing that would be helpful, but again not in the current set0up)

Big user and contributor on your database, I have a suggestion concerning the "age classifications" of movies and series. Today on the site, the classification used is as follows: U,10,12,16,18 In fact, this seems to me to be correct except for the "U" classification which corresponds in fact to "Tout public".

So, is it possible to replace this last classification by the following one : Tout public,10,12,16,18 ?

Thank you

For information, when we look at Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_picture_content_rating_system), we get the following content ratings: TP (for Tout public), -12, -16, -18 And for Television content ratings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motion_picture_content_rating_system), we find : -10, -12, -16, -18. Regards, Vincent

You can see the current certifications we have for France here. That's correct, isn't it?

Indeed, this is what we should find on the site. Small precision for the TV series, in general the NR (not rated) does not appear...there is no badge for these series. Concerning the other badges, the "-" sign appears in front of the other badges, as I specified before. Finally, for the TP badge, you can often find "Tout public" instead.

Again, in France, the official organization that assign certification to movies could add a "with warning" label to the U/12/16/18 rating. And there is a huge difference for viewers (and parents) between a "U" and "U with warning". For example The Suicide Squad movie has the "U with warning" rating 😬 That's why I prefer U/U (with warning)/12/12 (with warning)/16/16 (with warning)/18/18 (with warning) system.

I made the exact same suggestion a year ago. Since the rating has recently been changed, I'd like to add some suggestion.

Besides changing the FR-U by a more explicit TP, I would say the system has been downgraded. As said above it still misses the "with warning" label. Besides the -10 rating has been removed for movies even though this rating can be found on DVD, Blu-ray and TV diffusion (in the case of a TV film for example).

Again the most complete French rating system would be:

  • U or "Tous publics" (General Audiences)
  • U or "Tous publics" with warning
  • 10 (or Accord Parental)
  • 12
  • 12 with warning
  • 16
  • 16 with warning
  • 18
  • 18 with warning (not used at this day)
  • 18 X rated (pornographic or extremely violent movies [not used since 1996])

Besides I'm noticing that the FR-U old rating hasn't been automatically changed to use the new TP label. Is it a mistake or are we really supposed to edit every single movies that have already been labelled FR-U?
