Nearing the end of winter, a hibernating hedgehog finds its sleep disturbed. Luckily, there is a friendly badger to help out.

This movie is based on texts of Bohumil Hrabal, world-known Czech prosaic. It's a story (in a form of a mosaic of short episodes and pictures) about the sadness and happiness of inhabitants of Kersko (Kersko is a small woody area full of cottages and roods). These people are both simple and sensitive, they have their own pleasures (e.g. Leli is a collector of cheap, but inutile things) and the greatest delight of all of them is a hunting. Crude poetics of amateur hunting is screened by dreamy pictures of this area. Menzel mixes sentimental lyricism and rough (but not vulgar!) humor and the outcome is the never-ending landscape of continuous life in the proximate nearness of nature. The performances of actors are brilliant. Both Rudolf Hrusinsky as a Franz and Jaromír Hanzlik as a Leli have nonrecurring charm bottomed on a pain and inebriation. Only the music is not perfect: Jiri Sust usually assembled his film music from his older works and in this movie there is many quotations.

A group of schoolchildren, having decided to congratulate their mothers on the 8th of March, go to the mountains for snowdrops. Various adventures await them on the way, they have to overcome many difficulties. But despite this, the guys come home with flowers.

A quarter century after the release of the original film, this sequel brings us a drama about platonic love, life retrospective and memories. Former schoolmates meet again in the mountains and it turns out they have not changed much. Even though so many years have passed, we can still see the souls of boys and girls we know from the teenage comedy Snowdrops and Aces; kids who participated in that legendary skiing course. Its nostalgic humour gives the film a bitter-sweet touch. Thawing Out follows the lives of the main heroes during a period of great changes. How did they manage to escape the traps and what scars have they suffered? Where did they want to go, how far have they got and what is still in front of them?

In a story told straight and with restraint we watch Naoko Hanami. She quit her job to look after her dementia-stricken mother Kiyo while the health of her father, Eiji, worsens with age. Struggling alone, she presents a stoic face to the world, too quiet and maybe too scared to speak up for herself. Finally, she turns to the city office to apply for welfare which is where caseworker Munemura, a genuine and sympathetic person, starts to investigate Naoko to see if she qualifies for help.

Produced in one room over the course of a week in the heart of lockdown, Sgàire Wood’s Powder Snowdrop Catatonic is an irreverent pantomime performance of mental deterioration under mandatory quarantine. Summoning a cast of capricious characters, Wood runs a Kübler-Ross style gamut of emotions precipitated by self-isolation, from misanthropic smugness to mind-bending ennui and cabin fever. Seen solely through the narrow lens of a smartphone camera, she dances before the flimsy trompe l’oeil facade of a Victorian parlour, existing in the space between coziness and claustrophobia, flippancy and sincerity. The film’s celebratory intimacy pays tribute to queer, radicalised or feminised practices which, being underrepresented in traditional art spaces, are relegated to the realm of domesticity and how under the circumstances in which the film was produced, have found a new appreciation and importance.
