Francis Alÿs is at the same time a painter, a videographer, an urban interventionist and, in his own way, an alchemist. He also hunts tornadoes. Having left Belgium fifteen years ago to settle in Mexico City, he has made the megalopolis a laboratory commensurate with his tireless quest, and his strange walks an art. To share this approach cinematographically is first of all to try to understand the relationship of man to the city, to understand their games, the rules of these games and to play them yourself with images, sounds and words.
“Discarded Christmas trees, colorfully arranged flea-market finds, a museum of animal kills, microscopic views of kitchenware, and other overlooked cultural artifacts are interwoven with flickering journeys through mysterious, shadowy realms. Traces/Legacy uses a device called a film recorder to print a series of still digital images onto 35mm film. The 35mm projector can only show a portion of the image at a time, so the viewer sees alterations between the top and bottom half of each frame. The images also overlap onto the optical sound area of the film, generating their own unique sounds.”—Scott Stark

At Carnac, in the Morbihan, the multitude of menhirs continues to question archaeologists. The most recent scientific research has identified dozens of new alignments of stones, some of which lie under the sea. Why, in the Neolithic period, did men erect gigantic funerary monuments at Carnac, to the glory of dignitaries as powerful as the Pharaohs? From often minute clues, scientists try to pierce the grey areas that still remain on this site and this unique society that radiated and disappeared suddenly in the heart of Brittany.
