1950s Japanese drama.

In the heart of the Šalek valley, behind a cloud of smoke from the nearby power plant, lies the town of Šoštanj. When Slovenia is supplied with enough electricity and the smoke dissipates, only a few people remain there. This is their story.

The screen is in flames as we are inside a crematorium. No much can be seen and the director focuses on the sound recording of the conversations between the employees. There is no place for mystical experiences in their lives, to the contrary – they perform all their tasks mechanically. Cremation is a simple process which turns a human corpse into ash.

A Colombian farmer, faced with the sterility of his wife, wants to adopt his orphan niece, but in order to achieve this he must destroy the demon of the town who is opposed and who, without knowing, had always intervened negativity in his life.

A cellar. A forgotten amphora. The ashes of a woman. Her granddaughter, daughter-in-law and son characterise her, entwining their memories and experiences. They reflect about filial love, gender and isolation through her overbearing nature.

Ashwathama is a 1979 Indian Malayalam-language film, directed by K. R. Mohanan. The film stars Madampu Kunjukuttan, Savitri and Vidhubala in the lead roles.
