Kyle und Swin sind Handlanger der Dixie Mafia. Ihrem Boss Frog, dem wichtigsten Mann im Untergrund von Arkansas, sind sie nie begegnet. Sie führen lediglich seine Anweisungen aus – so gut sie eben können. Als ihnen bei einem Job schwere Fehler unterlaufen, ist Frog alles andere als begeistert. Die Sache fällt ihnen auf die Füße und ihr Leben, so wie sie es kennen, ist vorbei.

Das Städtchen Hard Times wird von einem umherziehenden Banditen terrorisiert. Keiner der Bewohner, nicht einmal der Anwalt Will Blue (Henry Fonda) wagt es ihm Einhalt zu gebieten und so kommt es schließlich, dass das ganze Städtchen von dem Banditen abgefackelt wird. Nach dem Brand bleibt nur noch Blue, Molly und der kleine Jimmy, dessen Vater von dem Banditen getötet wurde, zurück. Als Ezra Maple durch Zufall in das zerfallen Kaff kommt und einen provisorischen Saloon betreibt, kommt tatsächlich wieder Leben das Städtchen. Aber nach dem Winter, kehrt der Bandit wieder zurück...

Als Onkel Hazel wegen eines Mordversuchs hinter Gittern landet, versammelt sich seine gesamte 'White Trash'-Familie zu einem Akt der Beistandsbekundung. Große Mengen Alkohol bringen die besonderen, höchst eigenwilligen Charakterzüge jedes einzelnen Mitglieds zur vollen Entfaltung. Vor allem bei dem Ehepaar Claude und Ruby scheint er gehörig für Feuer zu sorgen. Während Claude früher eine Affäre mit Rubys jüngerer Schwester hatte, verkehrte seine Frau mit weitaus durchtrainierteren Kerlen als ihm. Ergebnis ist ein nicht enden wollendes Chaos aus Streit, Neid und Eifersucht, was noch durch zwei skurrile Anwälte komplettiert wird.

Nach einem wenig erfolgreichen Banküberfall befindet sich der Ganove Joe Maybe auf der Flucht. Der ihn verfolgende Marshal ist ihm dicht auf den Fersen, kommt aber bei einem Sturz ums Leben. Joe schnappt sich den Stern und das Pferd des Toten und reitet Richtung Webb City. Der dortige Richter Kyle hält ihn zunächst mit sicherem Instinkt für den gesuchten Räuber. Doch als er den Stern sieht, glaubt er, den berühmten Noonan vor sich zu haben, und überredet ihn, als Marshal in der Stadt zu bleiben. Um sich nicht verdächtig zu machen, willigt Joe ein.

Im Saloon von Marble City taucht ein Indianer auf, der seinen Whiskey mit einem Beutel Goldnuggets bezahlt. Dies zieht natürlich sofort die Neugier der anderen Barbesucher auf sich, doch der Indianer wird getötet, bevor er den Fundort preisgeben kann. Damit ist die Jagd auf das Gold eröffnet und zieht neben einem ganzen Treck Goldsucher auch den zwielichtigen Matt Ellis in die Stadt. Neben den Scharmützeln untereinander haben die Bewohner der Stadt und die Goldgräber auch noch mit den Cherokee-Indiandern zu kämpfen, die sich von den Goldsuchern bedroht fühlen, denn auf ihrem Stammesgebiet liegt die Bonanza.
