The fourth film in the "Purge" franchise, "The First Purge" serves as a prequel to the 2013 original. The story follows the New Founding Fathers of America as they conduct a radical experiment on Staten Island, allowing residents to commit any crime for twelve hours with no consequences. While the previous films in the franchise have been criticized for their violence and lack of originality, "The First Purge" continues this trend and adds little to the franchise. The performances of Y'lan Noel and Lex Scott Davis are notable, but the film is otherwise filled with cliches and contrivances, and lacks tension or atmosphere. The addition of neon lights and Marisa Tomei in a blonde wig seems to be the only real reason for this movie's existence. The film is not a necessary addition to the franchise and does not add anything new to the story.
