Birds of Prey (formerly known as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey) is the latest addition to the DCEU, starring Margot Robbie as the wacky and violent Harley Quinn. After her breakup with the Joker, Harley finds herself the target of Gotham's scum and villainy, including the charismatic lunatic Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor), AKA Black Mask. To escape with her life, she must retrieve and return a priceless diamond to Sionis. Although the movie is marketed as Birds of Prey, it is primarily focused on Harley's story and development, while the other characters, Huntress (Winstead), Black Canary (Smollett-Bell) and Renee Montoya (Perez) feel somewhat sidelined. The action scenes are visually stunning and filled with color, confetti, and madness, but the screenplay is lacking in depth and the story feels light. Overall, Birds of Prey is a fun and entertaining film that allows Harley Quinn to shine, but could have delved deeper into the characters and their motivations.
