Actor and playwright Sam Shepard has died at 73 after suffering from ALS.
A second significant loss of the day after Jeanne Moreau. I always enjoyed his performances, especially in Days of Heaven and The Right Stuff. RIP.

"perhaps the only American literary giant who could have written the screenplay for a major movie and also played the romantic lead."

Yes. When I think of him and his work the word that comes to mind is "solid". No matter, the medium or the character, you always got a solid performance from him. (Also, didn't know that he was such a prolific and gifted writer--doubly blessed.)

I agree, he was kind of like Kris Kristofferson to me-- gruff but always caring, never fake.
