Henry Fonda was a great natural actor. He's not a star who I've personally ever felt drawn to (I think that's mainly because his performances tend to be low-key), though I nonetheless always have recognized and appreciated his talent.
I'll always especially think of 1938's Jezebel, 1939's Young Mr. Lincoln, 1940's The Grapes of Wrath, 1955's Mister Roberts, and 1981's On Golden Pond when I think of him.

Right, H Fonda is great in many films.
Whether he leads an ensemble cast, as in The Ox-Bow Incident or Twelve Angry Men, or whether he supports the ladies, like C Colbert, G Rogers or L Ball, or whether he matches wits with Stanwyck, H Fonda really does it all.
Years after his three Stanwyck films (Mad Miss Manton, Lady Eve and You Belong to Me), she was delightfully surprised to hear H Fonda call in retrospect B Stanwyck his favorite leading lady, and their great chemistry together shows in their films.

Stanwyck is the female co-star I most readily mentally associate with Fonda. She certainly was a real asset for any leading man to work with.

Sergio Leone saw something spectacular in Henry Fonda that everyone else missed...

He was great and against grain in Once Upon A Time In The West and he was also very good in Hitchcock's The Wrong Man .
