For me, I realize that I'm surely in the minority, but I'm especially a fan of her youthful work, of the Pre-Code through late mid '30s period.
Don't get me wrong: I'm also a fan of mature "affected" Bette. But I personally find her performances from her earlier years to be more natural and appealing (though, admittedly, not as compelling).
Whichever version of Bette, she was great!

She is such a great actress. 30s and 40s is my favourite era for Bette..

Hi, Aus! Yes: She was a true one of a kind in the best possible way. I do like her young demure phase, but also am a fan of her a bit more mature '40s era version. The subsequent "tough cookie" period is my least favourite Bette period.

Yeah, as she got older, she did play some nasty characters such as in The Nanny, The Anniversary and of course What Ever happened to Baby Jane..
