Suave, dashing and able to deliver a catty line better than anyone in the business, George Sanders was one of the prime character actors of the 40s-60s. On the face of it he was not an actor of enormous range, but within his limits he delivered a string of splendid performances and shone in any film in which he appeared.
He was frequently cast as a devilish villain, usually one step ahead of the hero until the final act - but, just occasionally, appeared as a well-bred everyman, or even as a romantic lead. And with his smooth, purring voice he was the perfect Disney villain as Shere Khan in The Jungle Book!
