Gustavo irrumpió en la escena del cine independiente en los años 90 con su muy original y muy aclamada versión del Chile posterior a Pinochet con "Johnny 100 Pesos". La película se convirtió en la película más taquillera de Chile y fue seleccionada como su candidata oficial tanto para la categoría de "Mejor Película en Lengua Extranjera" en los Premios de la Academia de 1993, como para los Premios Goya de España ese mismo año. En los EE. UU., la película se estrenó en el Festival de Cine de Sundance de 1994, donde se convirtió en un éxito instantáneo y se estrenó comercialmente en los EE. UU. con excelentes críticas de la prensa independiente. Para coronar su éxito, la película fue invitada a participar en festivales de primer nivel como el Festival Internacional de Cine de Tokio, New Directors New Films en el MOMA de Nueva York, Toronto y otros festivales prestigiosos como Montreal, Los Ángeles, San Sebastián, Munich, Londres, Estocolmo, Viena, Sídney, Río; y ganando numerosos premios, incluyendo la Mejor Película del Año de los críticos de cine chilenos y el 1er lugar en el "Mystery Film Festival" en Italia. "Johnny" pasó a obtener distribución mundial.

Su prestigio como cineasta internacional también ha llevado a Gustavo a convertirse en Presidente del Jurado del Premio de Cine Latinoamericano en el Festival de Cine de Sundance 1999.

El deseo de Gustavo de convertirse en cineasta comenzó a una edad temprana. Después de asistir a la facultad de derecho en la prestigiosa Universidad Católica de Chile, se fue para seguir su carrera cinematográfica como estudiante en la altamente selectiva y célebre HFF -Universidad de Cine y Televisión de Munich- en Alemania, donde pasó cinco años. Permaneció en Alemania donde desarrolló una carrera como guionista y director, comenzando con películas como "Filming with Douglas Sirk" -un documental sobre el maestro del melodrama en Hollywood, protagonizado por el gran director alemán de la posguerra Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Gustavo dirigió en Alemania su primer largometraje en inglés, "La voz", con los actores británicos Jon Finch y Suzanna Hamilton, y la fallecida estrella de rock Ian Dury.

Gustavo regresó a Chile luego de 15 años en Europa para escribir, producir y dirigir "Johnny 100 Pesos". Con este éxito en su haber, fue invitado a trabajar en los Estados Unidos y ofreció su primer largometraje estadounidense, "Diplomatic Siege", protagonizada por Darryl Hannah, Peter Weller y Tom Berenger. Su segunda película estadounidense, "Instinto de matar", presenta a la estrella de las artes marciales Mark Dacascos.

Recientemente, Gustavo ha estado dirigiendo, escribiendo y produciendo películas de gran presupuesto muy admiradas para la televisión chilena como "Balmaceda", por la que ganó el premio Altazor Televisión en la categoría de mejor drama. Su siguiente telefilme "Prat" alcanzó un récord de audiencia en ese país. En 2017 dirige y produce "Johnny 100 Pesos - Capítulo Dos".

Gustavo took the independent film scene by storm in the 90's with his very original and highly acclaimed take on post-Pinochet Chile with "Johnny 100 Pesos". The film became Chile's highest grossing movie and was selected as its official candidate for both the "Best Foreign Language Film" category in the 1993 Academy Awards, as well as the Spanish Goya Awards that same year. In the US, the film premiered at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival where it became an instant success and was commercially released in the US to rave reviews from the indie press. Crowning its success, the film was invited to participate in A-list festivals such as Tokyo International Film Festival, New Directors New Films at the MOMA in New York, Toronto, and other prestigious festivals like Montreal, Los Angeles, San Sebastian, Munich, London, Stockholm, V'iennale, Sydney, Rio; and winning numerous awards including the Chilean film critics' Best Movie of the Year and 1st place at the "Mystery Film Festival" in Italy. "Johnny" went on to obtain worldwide distribution.

His prestige as an international filmmaker has also led Gustavo to become President of the Jury of the Latin American Cinema Award at the Sundance Film Festival 1999.

Gustavo's desire to become a filmmaker started at an early age. Gustavo has most recently been directing, writing and producing greatly admired big budget movies for Chilean TV like "Balmaceda," for which he won the Altazor Television award in the best drama category. His next TV movie "Prat" reached a record audience in that country. In 2017 he directs and produces "Johnny 100 Pesos - Chapter Two".
