Discuss Shay Mitchell

I started reading it about a week ago, and I'm somewhat intrigued - enough to keep going with it, let's say. Good stuff! The book reads like it could've possibly benefited from another revision/polish, but hey, who said that first novels have to be tours de force? It's a first novel! Thus far, I've only followed the housewife Demi in her discovery of her husband's infidelity... it'll be interesting to see how the three main characters' stories play out over the course of 323 pages.

The first 100 pages have gone by easily and were entertaining. I could kinda see this novel being adapted into a feature film some day. Note to self: Ms. Mitchell and her writing partner don't owe it to you to bridge any gaps between these female characters and you. Along a similar line, I do respect Shay and Michaela's depictions of male sexist harassment against female characters, be it at the club where Sophia works or at a remarkably described Hollywood party. Also, I noticed how well Shay & Michaela know their main characters. Some of the Leandra character's carrying on when things don't go her way is so funny!

I finished "Bliss" this morning. Good read. There are lots of what I feel are clever scenarios in the book -- like I said, this could be a feature film. Somewhere past the halfway point, it seemed like the style changed and maybe I detected where one writer picked up for the other. On the minus tip, there are some weird tense issues in the book... I don't know if they're deliberate, but they're awkward, and I thought I saw some typos too.

Cheers

I'm curious how you can say the 'first 100 pages' have gone by easily? It was about 48 days from when you started & that works out to be about 2 pages a day?

Hey, Face. I read the whole book intermittently, with long pauses between reading sessions. As you probably know, I like to write on the web. So basically, to be the prolific writer I like to be, I don’t read much at all. I just write (and rewrite).

When I was actually reading, those first 100 pages went by fast.

But doesn't that interrupt the flow of the story? That would be like taking a month to watch The Godfather for 5 or 6 minutes a day (just an example)?

Yeah it does. Ha. But I try to see my movies in one sitting, as much as I can.

Brat, when you read a novel as long as "Bliss" is, do you read it straight through? Or do you take pauses?

And if and when you take pauses, doesn't that interrupt the flow of the story?

Well CF,

I normally do not read fiction, so the 'flow' isn't that drastic for nonfiction. But the last 'novel' I did read was Game of Thrones so I could get a sense of the characters & story before I watched the series. That book had 694 pages & I read it in 3 days. I guess the point I was trying to make was, it seemed odd that it took you 48 days to read 100 pages & that doesn't sound like an 'easy read'?

Hey brat,

That was a good question on your part. We all have our idiosyncrasies. The thing with me nowadays is, I’d much rather write than read. I was determined to finish the book, but reading takes a back seat to writing when it’s about both.

If I may ask? What are you writing?

Well, don't accuse me of fudging because I did say "rewrite" earlier, but anyway, I've been revising a spec screenplay of late, along with a different feature-length script... in addition, I sometimes write music reviews over at Amazon and keep up my regular postings at Instagram... also, I sometimes plan/research a second feature-length script, and lastly, I post regularly here.

I have one spec (meaning written on speculation) script that industry pros can read on a certain web site, and then there's the other one I mentioned, which I am still developing. But One Good Job is all polished up and done.
