Biography

Born in Lausanne from a father of Spanish origin and a mother of German origin, Vincent Pérez (Vicente Pérez) spent a good part of his childhood in Penthaz and then in Cheseaux, Canton of Vaud. After studying photography at the Center Doret in Vevey, he studied dramatic art in Geneva, then at the Conservatoire and the school of Amandiers de Nanterre.

Né en Suisse à Lausanne, Vincent Perez (à l'état civil Vicente Pérez) est le deuxième des trois enfants d'Antonio Pérez Alberola, d'origine espagnole, qui a immigré en France pour venir travailler dans l'import-export, et d'Arnoldine Bush, d'origine allemande, née le 30 juin 1939 à Bonn. Son grand-père paternel Antonio Pérez Picot a été fusillé par les franquistes en 1939. Vincent Perez passe une bonne partie de son enfance à Penthaz, puis à Cheseaux-sur-Lausanne, dans le canton de Vaud.

Après des études de photographie au Centre d'enseignement professionnel de Vevey, il étudie l'art dramatique à Genève, puis au Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique de Paris et à l'école des Amandiers de Nanterre.

Il est encore étudiant lorsqu'il débute au cinéma en 1985 dans Gardien de la nuit. Dès ses débuts d'acteur, il est courtisé par les plus grands réalisateurs : Patrice Chéreau (Hôtel de France), Jean-Paul Rappeneau (Cyrano de Bergerac) ou encore Ettore Scola (Le Voyage du capitaine Fracasse). En 1992, Indochine de Régis Wargnier lui permet d'asseoir son statut de séducteur. Dès lors, Vincent Perez va collectionner les personnages d'amants romantiques, que ce soit dans des comédies (Fanfan, Le Libertin, Epouse-moi) ou des fresques d'envergure (La Reine Margot).

C'est à partir de 1996, avec Par-delà les nuages de Michelangelo Antonioni et Wim Wenders et The Crow : la cité des anges, que le comédien donne une orientation internationale à sa carrière. Cette tendance se confirme avec Au coeur de la tourmente (1997), un drame sentimental où Vincent Perez a pour partenaire Rachel Weisz, Je rêvais de l'Afrique (2000), où il s'éprend cette fois-ci de Kim Basinger, ou encore La Reine des damnés (2002) qui lui permet de renouer avec le genre fantastique. Souhaitant casser son image de jeune premier, l'acteur n'hésite pas à s'illustrer en traître dans Le Bossu (1997) et à se travestir dans Ceux qui m'aiment prendront le train (1998), prestations qui lui vaudront d'être nommé à deux reprises pour le César du Meilleur second rôle.
