Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 - July 30, 2022; 89 years old) R.I.P..
From Uhura.com:
Dear Friends, Fans, Colleagues, World,
I regret to inform you that a great light in the firmament no longer shines for us as it has for so many years.
Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration.
Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.
I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.
Live Long and Prosper,
Kyle Johnson

I heard on the news that Nichols wanted to leave "Star Trek" after season 1, but none other than MLK convinced her to stay because her role was important to her people.
She was / is awesome!! And she portrayed one of my faves on the original series.

I just watched “Plato’s Stepchildren” last Friday (7/29)—without knowing that it was the episode with The Kiss “heard” across the universe.
Found it interesting that it was originally written for "Uhura and Kirk", but (for whatever reason) it was rewritten for "Uhura and Spock". However, when Shatner found out about the rewrite he insisted that it be changed back to "Uhura and Kirk". And…the rest (as they say) is history.
Glad I watched the episode before this sad news broke, and got the chance to enjoy seeing her at her most memorable.
