Discuss Sidney Poitier

I let out a moan as I read this. Apparently, the actor - the first black man to win the best actor Oscar - has transitioned at the age of 94.

Rest in peace, Mr. Poitier... without you, in a way, we'd have no Laurence, no Denzel, we would've had no Chadwick, no Forest and so on.

My condolences go out to Mr. Poitier's family; I know he has daughters, including Sydney, who's an actor herself.

Now see, I started this thread with the best of intentions (paying homage to our great actor), and now it's turned into a device for vomiting up hatred against white folks and stuff like their hair.

This web site is going downhill like I cannot believe....

What you described in the latter part of your sentence is exactly what Malcolm X(whom you've described as a personal hero of yours, in a separate thread)spent the better part of his public career doing. In any event. one has to really stretch the definition of "hate" to describe anything I've written as such. And earlier on, I shared in the RIP of Poitier

mech,

Did you make a New Years' resolution to be even more of a troll than usual?

So what? I don’t require my heroes and sheroes to be perfect.

Actually, I’m thinking I must be a masochist, because nowadays my day isn’t complete without reading your verbal abuse directed at people like me (black folks, or more specifically, “light skins,” to use the current vernacular).

And earlier on, I shared in the RIP of Poitier

Can you at least produce a link to some article backing up your claims about Gable?

This is a memoriam thread, like Cell created it to be. It's regarding a great star who has died. If a poster responding can't be reasonably respectful and relevantly on-topic, don't comment. Any more b.s. and intentionally off-topic, etc. posting, a ban of the individual doing such derailing commenting may well (and likely will) result. And, incidentally, when a user is banned, every thread they (the banned user) ever created and every comment they ever made gets automatically deleted. So, if a trolling or otherwise trouble-making user doesn't respect other contributors' threads, and doesn't care what they trash up and ruin around here, realize that worse can happen to your own threads and comments: They can ALL get zapped and vanish in one fell swoop.

It's not very often that we ban message board users here; it's something we don't like to do, and that we generally avoid doing. That could change at any moment. Site trouble-makers, consider this a warning. Anyone who gets banned, they may not be warned first. Banned individuals bring it on their own selves, don't deserve and won't be shown respect, and of course know they had it coming.

Regarding mech's divergence from my intended direction on the thread, I just want to say that some vigorous discussion is always a good thing. However, I have personally learned over many years that while a celebrity's death may provoke intense dialogue, debating, and so on, negative discussion of the late celebrity can be regarded as poor taste (especially by sympathizers to the late party) - particularly so soon after the person's death.

I'm not very much in favor of zapping folks here into oblivion, but hijacking a thread that was meant to honor a deceased celeb who is loved and revered in order to carry out what appears to be a personal agenda against another poster is uncalled for.
