Most old-lady actresses, appearing in classic films, you may appreciate them and their performances, but you tend to forget about them once the movie is over.
Maria Ouspenskaya (1876-1949) is a rare exception. Despite that she was in only twenty English-language films, she happens to have been in some especially popular and/or otherwise still today very well remembered ones, particularly good examples being Dodsworth (1936), Love Affair (1939), and The Wolf Man (1941). In each of those, her performance strongly stands out and is most definitely memorable.
Madame Ouspenskaya's part in each of the cited examples is only minutes in duration, giving her minimal screen time, though she made the most of every second.
Love Affair is definitely, by far, my favourite of her performances. The sweetly tender, heartbreaking portrayal she gives in that is entirely convincing.
