1926年4月18日(丙寅年农历三月初七)，李翰祥出生于辽宁锦西，年轻时曾在国立北平艺术专科学校学习油画及在上海戏剧专科学校学戏剧电影。

1948年赴香港，曾做美工、小演员等。1954年首次执导，并进入邵氏，拍摄多套古装片，包括《江山美人》、《梁山伯与祝英台》等，获得票房与好评。1963年，在电懋老板陆运涛支持下到台湾成立国联电影，1965年的《西施》获得金马奖最佳故事片导演。其后改拍一系列票房不俗的奇情片、骗术片、风月片，与白小曼、余莎莉、陈萍、邵音音、狄娜、胡锦、陈思佳、恬妮、楚湘云等多位女星有合作经历。1972年拍摄《大军阀》，把许冠文带入影坛，并教他电影的知识，奠定日后他成为影响香港影坛走向的重要人物[1]。

1983年，李翰祥至中国大陆，拍摄其清宫三部曲：《火烧圆明园》、《垂帘听政》、《火龙》等一系列清宫片，把原放弃当TVB艺员的梁家辉带入影坛。

1996年8月起，李翰祥在北京拍摄刘晓庆主演的40集电视剧《火烧阿房宫》；于同年12月17日下午在录影厂内开会讨论拍摄杀青戏时突然心脏病发作，紧急送医后抢救至晚上9时45分离世。

Richard Li Han Hsiang (Chinese: 李翰祥; pinyin: Lǐ Hànxiáng; 7 March 1926 in Jinxi, Liaoning - 17 December 1996 in Beijing) was a Chinese film director. Li directed more than 70 films in his career beginning in the 1950s and lasting till the 1990s. His The Enchanting Shadow, The Magnificent Concubine, and Empress Wu Tse-Tien were entered into the Cannes Film Festival in 1960, 1962, and 1963 respectively.

Li also won the Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards for his work on the movie Xi Shi in 1965. Most of his movies in the 1970s and 1980s were Chinese historical dramas. He died in Beijing due to a heart attack. He was seventy.
