Biography

John Hipwell: Producer

John Hipwell is one of Australia’s most versatile & experienced feature film producers with extensive credits on feature films (20), documentaries (16), TV and Cinema Commercials (86), corporate (110), video art (25), international co-productions and numerous short films. Trained at Victorian College of the Arts (Swinburne Campus) in film/TV productions in the early 70’s, his rights of passage were initiated on the early iconic films such as Alvin Purple, Snap Shot and Mad Max. He has eleven Producer credits on more recent Australian feature films including the Australian/Canadian co-production Sci-Fi feature film Arctic Blast (Co-Executive Producer) and the multi award winning Is This Real World, (Producer) 2015. His documentary KoHoNas (Producer), screened on SBS on November 11, 2009 and the Documentary Back to My Roots, (Producer) screened worldwide on BBC World News, 2010. Between 2014 and 2016, John produced two high end Indian TVC’s and three high end Corporate Productions for three separate USA Clients all in Australia. John Is currently developing his next feature film with three scripts in various stages of development/financing.

John has received various film and TV awards for his documentary and feature film productions and his Video Art work is collected by public (Inc. ACMI, Australian Jewish Museum, Deakin University) and private collections (Aus. & Int.).

John is included in many publications and broadcasts, has held various academic positions and is an active and successful mentor and lecturer. He was a board member of Arts and Recreation Training Victoria from 1989 to 1998 and was an energetic board member of Open Channel Co-operative Limited from 2008 to 2013.
