Joan Allen is a wonderful actress who is, alas, quite often underused on screen. For a brief period during the mid to late 1990s it seemed like she was everywhere, one of the foremost American movie actresses, and that an Oscar would be just around the corner. Unfortunately - to date - this has not panned out, and she has not been cast in all that many memorable roles in recent years (although I thought she was wonderful in Room).

• The Ice Storm (1997) **my favourite American film of the 90s, and she is one vital cog of a brilliant ensemble.
• Pleasantville (1998) **such a sweet, funny, touching performance. And her bathtub scene is one to remember!
• The Upside of Anger (2005) **how she failed to pick up a nomination for this in one of the weakest years for the Best Actress category, I will never know.
• Room (2015)
