Youssou N'Dour (also known as Youssou Madjiguène Ndour; born 1 October 1959) is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, musician, composer, occasional actor, businessman, and politician. In 2004, Rolling Stone described him as, "perhaps the most famous singer alive" in Senegal and much of Africa and in 2023, the same publication ranked him at number 69 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. From April 2012 to September 2013, he was Senegal's Minister of Tourism.

N'Dour helped develop a style of popular Senegalese music known by all Senegambians (including the Wolof) as mbalax, a genre that has sacred origins in the Serer music njuup tradition and ndut initiation ceremonies. He is the subject of the award-winning films Return to Gorée (2007) directed by Pierre-Yves Borgeaud and Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love (2008) directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, which were released around the world.

In 2006, N'Dour was cast as Olaudah Equiano in the film Amazing Grace.

Ethnically, N'Dour is Serer, born to a Serer father and a Toucouleur mother. However, culturally, N'Dour is Wolof. He was born in Dakar. He started performing at age 12 and would later perform regularly with the Star Band, Dakar's most popular group during the 1970s.

Despite N'Dour's maternal connection to the traditional griot caste, he was not raised in that tradition, which he learned instead from his sibling. Although patrilineally from the noble N'Dour family, his parents' world-view encouraged a modern outlook, leaving him open to two cultures and thereby inspiring N'Dour's identity as a modern griot. As a Mouride disciple, taalibé in Wolof, a Muslim of the Mouride brotherhood, one of the large four Sufi orders in Senegambia, he often incorporated aspects of Islamic music and chants into his work.

At the age of 15, Youssou N'Dour joined Super Diamono and, in 1975, toured with the band in West Africa.

In 1976 when N'Dour was 16 years old, he signed a contract to sing with Ibra Kasse's Star Band at Kasse's Miami club in Dakar where he would become a sensation.

In 1978, N'Dour would follow as several members of the Star Band left to form Étoile de Dakar, a band that made important contributions to Senegal's newly evolving musical style called mbalax which incorporated traditional Senegalese music into the Latin styles that had dominated Senegalese popular music. Although they quickly became one of the city's most popular bands, the group was short-lived due to internal problems. Étoile de Dakar split into two groups: Étoile 2000 and Super Étoile de Dakar. The latter group included N'Dour, guitarist Jimi Mbaye, bassist Habib Faye, and tama (talking drum) player Assane Thiam. Super Étoile de Dakar produced four albums on cassette in just a few months and eventually evolved into N'Dour's backing band.

Youssou Madjiguène N'Dour, né le 1er octobre 1959 à Dakar (Sénégal), est un auteur-compositeur-interprète, musicien et homme politique sénégalais.

«Roi du mbalax» au Sénégal, chanteur africain à la renommée internationale, il est également patron de presse à partir de 2003 et de la fondation du groupe Futurs Médias. Il s'engage dans le mouvement anti-Wade et devient, au sein du gouvernement Mbaye, ministre de la Culture et du Tourisme du Sénégal à partir du 4 avril 2012 puis ministre du Tourisme et des Loisirs du 29 octobre 2012 au 2 septembre 2013, avant d'être rattaché au président Macky Sall comme ministre-conseiller.

Aîné de sa famille, Youssou Madjiguène N'Dour a grandi dans le quartier de Médina à Dakar. Son père Elimane N'Dour est Sérère et sa mère Ndeye Sokhna Mboup est une griotte Wolof.

De confession musulmane, membre de la confrérie mouride du Sénégal, Youssou N'Dour a eu un fils, Birane, et une fille, Thioro, de deux mères différentes, puis s'est marié avec Mami Camara. Ensemble, ils ont eu quatre enfants avant de divorcer officiellement après dix-sept ans de mariage. Il s'est remarié avec Aïda Coulibaly, métisse sénégalo-française, actuelle présidente de la Fondation Youssou N'Dour, et a eu avec elle quatre enfants dont l'avant-dernier est prénommé Ibrahima Nelson Mandela.

Il commence adolescent à chanter dans les fêtes de famille en quittant l'école sans aller au lycée. Il commence sa carrière à l'âge de dix-neuf ans avec le groupe Étoile de Dakar. Le producteur sénégalais Ibrahima Sylla enregistre le premier album avec le groupe au Studio Golden Baobab. Youssou N'Dour acquiert une notoriété au Sénégal et décide en 1979, de fonder son propre orchestre le Super Étoile de Dakar.

Il a travaillé avec des artistes de renommée internationale comme Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Manu Dibango, Alan Stivell. En 1985, il fera la rencontre des artistes français Michel Berger, Daniel Balavoine, et Jean-Jacques Goldman, mais cette rencontre n'aboutira à aucun projet avec eux en particulier, sinon de découvrir des projets humanitaires comme Action écoles pour aider les enfants africains, ou celui d'apporter des pompes à eau pour les agriculteurs africains démunis.

L'une des chansons les plus célèbres de Youssou N'Dour est 7 Seconds en duo avec la chanteuse Neneh Cherry. Le clip, tourné à New York, a été réalisé par Stéphane Sednaoui. En 1998, il compose l'hymne pour la phase finale de la Coupe du monde de football de 1998, La Cour des grands, qu'il chante avec Axelle Red. En 2008, il travaille aussi avec l'artiste congolais Koffi Olomidé dans l'album Bord Ezanga Kombo; il interprète la chanson Festival avec Koffi Olomidé et Cindy Le Cœur.

Il est le compositeur de la musique du film d'animation Kirikou et la Sorcière réalisé par Michel Ocelot (1997).

Il joue également dans le film Amazing Grace (2006) à travers le personnage d’Olaudah Equiano et joue son propre rôle dans le documentaire Retour à Gorée (2007) évoquant l'histoire de la traite négrière et son héritage musical à travers le jazz et le gospel.

Il a également chanté en duo avec la diva libanaise Majida El Roumi la chanson Biladi Ana, sortie dans l'album Ghazal (2012) de cette dernière. En 2013, il décroche le Polar Music Prize, en Suède. ...
