Ruiz was born at Carcassonne, daughter of musician Didier Blanc though later taking her grandmother's maiden name Ruiz. In 2001, she was a prominent contestant in the first French edition of Star Academy, a popular TV reality-show and musical contest. She was defeated in the semi-final by eventual winner Jenifer Bartoli but according to an interview on Europe 1 she claimed that she never wanted to win and, following a post-series tour, worked to distance herself from the Star Ac image.

For her second studio album La Femme Chocolat, Olivia Ruiz was recognised by the Victoires de la Musique as the Female Artist of the Year in 2007. For the live performances accompanying the record, she also received the prize in the category of Musical Show, Tour or Concert of the Year. The album topped the French chart and was certified as a diamond record for selling more than 750,000 copies in France and made it to the top 50 of the Walloon and Swiss charts. Off the album, the music videos of the tracks "J'traine des pieds" and "La femme chocolat" were placed on rotation on the MCM French TV channel in 2006. The singles made it to the top 50 of the French and Walloon charts.

Olivia Ruiz wrote all the lyrics for her third studio album Miss Météores, co-orchestrated the music and employed a crew of guest stars including the rapper Buck 65, the indie band Noisettes and the folk and dark cabaret project Lonely Drifter Karen and featured the styles of nouvelle chanson, punk, folk and Hispanic rock. The record topped the French and Walloon album charts in 2009. Off the album, the single "Elle panique", with the music written by Buck 65 peaked at #2 of the Walloon chart. The music video of the song was placed on rotation on the MCM in May 2009. Her partner is Mathias Malzieu, the lead singer of the band Dionysos.

Olivia Ruiz naît le 1er janvier 1980 à Carcassonne, fille de Didier Blanc, musicien et chanteur de bal, et de Christiane Blanc, employée de bureau à la MSA. Elle choisira son nom de scène Ruiz en hommage à sa grand-mère paternelle.

La famille maternelle et la grand-mère paternelle, d'origine espagnole qui ont fui le franquisme, ont vécu de 1981 à 1990 à Marseillette dans le bar-tabac-hôtel-restaurant du village (lieu qui fera l'objet de son deuxième album). En 1985, un deuxième enfant naît, Anthony, qui deviendra compositeur de rap sous le nom de Toan et psychologue interculturel, actif dans des projets humanitaires auxquels il associe sa sœur.

Après des années de collège à Capendu, et un bac théâtre expression dramatique à Narbonne, c'est à Montpellier qu'Olivia Ruiz part continuer ses études. Elle choisit les arts du spectacle à la fac, puis s'oriente vers un BTS en communication, qu'elle obtient. Dès l'âge de 15 ans, elle s'investit dans la musique, quitte le giron familial pour aller vivre chez une tante à Narbonne, enchaîne des cours de danse et de théâtre, dont 4 années aux médiévales de Carcassonne, et forme avec ses amis de Comigne le groupe rock Five, assurant des premières parties et gagnant des tremplins, en reprenant des chansons des Cranberries ou de Lenny Kravitz.

Parallèlement, elle suit des cours de danse à l'École Pelizzon à Carcassonne et Trèbes, et entre dans la troupe associative des Médiévales de Carcassonne pour son spectacle estival. Avec Frank Marty (des groupes THC, Les Croquants et La Varda), multi-instrumentiste originaire de Narbonne, ils présentent un répertoire dans des bars, où ils interprètent des chansons de Fréhel, Montand, Bécaud, mais aussi de la nouvelle génération avec la Tordue et des standards espagnols. Elle chante également en compagnie de son père dans sa formation Didier Blanc et la Belle Histoire. En 2001, ils créent un duo présenté en Languedoc-Roussillon, dans lequel ils interprètent des titres liés à la chanson française et espagnole.

En 2001, elle participe à la première saison Star Academy, où elle parviendra en demi-finale. Opposée à Jenifer, elle sera éliminée mais avouera qu'elle ne voulait pas réellement gagner. Elle profite de ce tremplin pour signer chez Universal mais tente de se détacher de l'image Star Academy. La chanson Paris, écrite par Chet, annonce son premier album, J'aime pas l'amour, pour lequel elle contacte Néry (ancien membre des VRP, qui mettra en scène son premier spectacle), Prohom, Juliette ou encore le groupe Weepers Circus, qui lui écrira la chanson Petite fable et l'invitera à des duos sur trois de ses propres albums. Elle est alors nommée aux Victoires de la musique 2005 dans la catégorie Révélation scène. ...
