United States in 2043?

The one big missing part of the last scene, at least for me, was the lack of the flag of the United States flying over the monument. Was this an oversight, or was it done on purpose to make us think perhaps the United States doesn't exist? With the Postman's possible dying words being, "I believe in the United States," I fight that highly unlikely.

Gosh, been a LONG time since I saw this movie but if I remember correctly the United States did NOT in fact exist. It was a relic of the past and the Postman was trying to reinstitute the spirit of the long forgotten United States back into society.
