Keskustele nimikkeestä Opération frère cadet

People today don't remember this film from the late 1960's, but it is a fun spy film that harkens back to the old days of the original Bond films. It features many familiar Bond faces, such as the lead actress from From Russia with Love, the lead villain actor from Thunderball, the M actor, and the Monypenny actress. AND... it has Connery!!

Well, Neil Connery, not his older famous brother, but the physical resemblance is uncanny. It's like watching Sean Connery again from his Dr. No days. Same posture, same mannerisms, same cheekbones and hair style. Uncanny.

Oh, and the film was shot with Technicolor, so it REALLY looks an early Bond film. The music is great, by Morriocone (sp?), who did all those wonderful western themes. He gives Barry a run for his money as a Bond composer.

This film is known as Operation Kid Brother or OK Connery. The plot is not too important, just a means through which to display exotic locales, lovely Bond girls (and there are many!), and devious villainry. Basically, the kid brother of a famous 00 agent is recruited to foil the plot of a mastermind criminal organization (not SPECTRE but you get the idea) to extort money from world governments.

The younger connery , in this film, is a talented plastic surgeon who also excels at archery, martial arts, and believe it or not, hypnotism. All these talents come into play in the film. It all adds up to great fun, back when Bond films used to be FUN. NOT too heavy, not too overblown. The Daniel Craig films take themselves too seriously and are downers, which limits their rewatchability.

OK Connery is a not technically Bond canon, but there are references to 007 all throughout the film. Neil Connery was even suggested, at one point, as a possible replacement for James Bond after You Only Live Twice. That role went to Lanzenby, but we can all wonder "what if...."

The one thing I wish they could have done was let Neil dub his own voice. He was apparently ill during post production, so an American actor dubbed his voice instead (this was an Italian production so all voices were dubbed, as was commonplace at the time).

Still, if you want to see a "lost" Connery spy film that is fun, not too campy, and definitely too too drawn out and depressing, check out OK Connery!
