A few things have always confused me about the film, such as how long after the water-apocalypse it takes place. If it's been long enough for gill and feet-webbing mutations to show up in people (not to mention giant sea monsters to evolve), wouldn't that mean we're AT LEAST thousands of years into the future? Would all those rusty old ships really hold up for thousands of years before using up practically all their resources?
I'm glad the theatrical cut excised the bit that "Dryland" was Mt. Everest. To me, that just goes beyond stupid because it would take a ridiculously long time for barren ice and rock to become fertile enough to have full forests growing on it.
...not to mention issues of oxygen. Does anyone have a firmer scientific grasp on if and how it would be possible to push the breathable atmosphere to a higher elevation by raising the sea levels. Is that how it works? For there to be that much new water on earth I would imagine a few comets must have struck in addition to the polar ice caps melting.

You assume the water levels rose way up there. Ever consider the techtonic plates shifting such that Everest and other big mountains actually went downwards and are not very tall anymore? Hence, no oxygen problems at its low altitude. There is sufficient water on this planet to cover most of the Earth’s surface.
BTW, I like this movie. Under-rated film. It’s like Mad Max on water and holds up well compared to modern action flicks which are all CGI anyway.

I always thought it was a few hundred years only. Since people still talk about dry land. If it was thousands Im sure most people would have completely forgotten about it. I always thought the mutations could just have been from some sort of exposure to chemicals. As for the sea creature, Im just guessing its just some giant predator that is basically king of the hill so to speak. But after saying all that, its a film, so you have to suspend disbelief to fully enjoy it.
