讨论 The Rock

Both crazy, high octane, Jerry Bruckheimer actioners. I went mental for these back in my teenage years.

Which do you prefer?

The Rock.

i like both

Both great but Con Air is more out and out stupid so probably just edges it.

Looking forward to Cage's new film next week!

Is that The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent? I haven't properly looked forward to a film for a long time but I'm really, really looking forward to that. It's supposed to be amazing and I'm guessing it'll have a Being John Malkovich kind of vibe to it.

Yeah, that's the one.

Really looking forward to it as well. Not a massive Cage fan as such but rewatched The Rock recently and think the premise for Unbearable Weight looks good / fun. Fingers crossed it delivers...

That bit in the trailer where he sees the life size model of his Face/Off character and says "It's grotesque... I'll give you twenty thousand for it" had me pissing myself.

Con Air is a very entertaining movie but The Rock is an action masterpiece.

It's a giant leap in quality.

lmao my exact thoughts. Both films tread the line of absurdity, but I feel like The Rock was playing it too straight while Con Air gave us what we want. Out and out stupid.

In what planet is The Rock a "stupid movie"?

Some people are so insecure that love to call everything "stupid".

Referring to a movie using any adjective isn't insecure.

Lashing out and trying to insult people for having a different opinion than you.... Doesn't exactly project self confidence now does it?

Wow, great question!

At first, I thought this was a no-brainer for The Rock...but as I reflected on Con Air, I realized, not so fast, there's more going on in Con Air than just explosions and John Malkovich being John Malkovich. While Con Air has tons of that campy fun that reminds me of Arnie's Total Recall, CA has a similar theme to The Hunt for Red October — John Cusack plays the role that Alec Baldwin played, trying to better understand the key dude who is not as evil as "they" made him out to be, in a race against time. That said, CA's set up that gets Cage's character into trouble seems, clumsily contrived.

Of course, the ambition of The Rock has been explored — I am among those who are convinced it really actually is a James Bond film (!). Thus, it, too, is much more than just a bit explosive action movie even though there are moments when it seems not as serious as it should be.

If I could, I'd be happy to embrace them both; if I had to choose, I'd give the edge, be it ever so slight, to The Rock.

You?

Neither!

Clearly YOU are extremely insecure.

Yes, insecure people like you call "stupid" to every movie that has action there.

It's like you want to sound intelectual or superior to others.

I think you misread a few posts, mate.

I don't see where anyone called The Rock "stupid."

Rooprect wrote that Con Air "gave us what we want. Out and out stupid" and I think we can recognize this as slang/colloquial for "crazy silly fun", you know, "stoopid" as in "get stoopid, outrageous."

Exactly... "crazy silly fun" or like you said "campy fun" is what we're talking about here. No need for anyone to get their knickers in a knot.

But it brings up the topic we've touched on elsewhere... Sometimes subtle camp & satire goes over people's heads; they end up taking the flick too seriously. I guess it's fine if they like it that way. But jeez... imagine someone getting all bent out of shape because you didn't take "Airplane!" as a serious disaster flick 😬

The Rock's camp was so subtle you could almost take it as a serious action drama. But a few hilarious tongue in cheek moments stood out like the adrenaline shot to the heart INSTANTLY producing a full 100% recovery (not unlike the burst of Martian oxygen in Total Recall that instantly saves Arnie from 3rd degree radiation burns - lmaooo. Thanks for reminding me of that flick!). But pound for pound I think Con Air had more stupidity so I enjoyed it more on that level. I mean, where did that random PILE DRIVER come from on the Las Vegas strip? As if the poor guy wasn't dead enough, he needed a PILE DRIVER thru the skull. That's what I call STOOOOPID
