Discuter de Irreversible

Item: Irréversible

Language: fr

Type of Problem: Bad_image

Extra Details: Hi,

Could you please lock the language of the posters I uploaded in the French posters section? This is a French movie. Actually, I think that some of the posters in the English section with only the title should be moved to French.

Thanks Simon

Since the original title is Irréversible (with the ´), and the translated English title is Irreversible (without the ´), any poster with only the title (and no ´) goes in English. At least that's how I interpret this situation.

Actually, none of the french official posters have the accent on Irréversible. Example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/37q2pawhdyzqrxx/hd_france.jpg?dl=0

I understand that, but based on the original title - assuming that it is correct - this is how the "title only" poster situation would be resolved.

In French it is quite common not to put accents on uppercase letters. I do not know, I would say it is quite similar to the following rule.

Sometimes the same title is written with two different alphabets. Using Hindi/Bollywood movies as an example, "दंगल" and its romanized title "Dangal" might look like two different titles, but they are pronounced the same. The English translation is actually "Wrestling Competition". Therefore the correct language for Indian posters using "दंगल" and "Dangal" is Hindi.

I would find it a shame that English language is favored and French posters could not be clean posters with only the title because the official marketing materials do not include the accent on É.

Are you saying that the correct original title is IRREVERSIBLE? Poster titles are usually only a small part in deciding what the correct original title is. But if that's the case, your argument would indeed be very valid. However, I can't find much support for that being the case.

Anyhow, I'll leave it open so another moderator can weigh in. It's a strange case since a different judgment would move all "title only" posters to French (like you suggested in your first post).

No, I am not saying the title should be IRREVERSIBLE. For me, the original title should remain "Irréversible" and original language "French".

I am just saying that in the promotional images (posters for example) the title is stylized. The R and E letters are backward and all letters are capitalized, losing their accent on the way. But it does not change the source language (otherwise, the language should be gibberish because of the backward letters grinning )

Here is a capture of the press kit: https://www.dropbox.com/s/8xz1ygc22omc93g/presskit.jpg?dl=0

Besides the title, you can see that the tag line "Le temps révèle tout" is also stylized in the same way.

It is quite common in French that letters lose their accent in their uppercase form. For example the Lord of the Rings French title is "Le Seigneur des anneaux : La Communauté de l'anneau" (note the accent on Communaut*é*), however the accent does not appear in any poster: https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/120-the-lord-of-the-rings-the-fellowship-of-the-ring/images/posters?language=fr-FR

I understand your argument perfectly, but the problem is that we have a translated English title that is added because it is different from the original title. So we are making a distinction between the two titles at that level due to our title rules. That is what makes this case unique. Any other example would only make sense if a translated English title is the same, only without the accent. So, whoever wants to weigh in here, the question is whether the original title should matter for posters when it comes to deciding poster language for title only posters. I think it should matter, while you think it should not matter since the posters have stylized titles. Let's wait for some more opinions.

It was decided that an accent should not be taken into consideration when setting a poster language (just like you said). I have moved all posters without English in them to French. The remaining four poster unfortunately have nudity in them which is a problem. I have asked about that internally. In the end we may have no English posters left! sneezing_face

Thank you for the clarifications. relaxed

If you talk about these posters, she is not naked. In fact she has a very thin white dress that make it looks like she is naked.

I noticed that now. That brief see-through should be within the rules... I should probably get new eyeglasses or something. wink
