What a fantastic surprise! Somehow missed seeing this (probably because I'd impressionably bought into this being rubbish, Arnie firmly into the Twins / Kindergarten Cop era by then) but what an unexpected treat.
Vintage Schwarzenegger in what is a loving homage to the 80s action blockbuster. It's weird seeing it for the first time now as you can see why it may have failed at the time - it was made too close in time to it's subject matter, so I guess for some the lines were too blurred to make sense of it. It's a film which should have been made now! But because it wasn't, we get vintage Schwarzenegger and the goofy Goonies kid starring in a brilliantly directed, almost Spielberg 80s styling that everyone's cloning now.
Great film. Not quite a classic but not far off...

Yes, this film has always been treated very unfairly. I think it was ahead of it's time. Self awareness hadn't really gotten into full swing back then.
But despite what critics said at the time, the majority of people I speak to in person really like it. It's fondly remembered by many.
If you haven't already seen it then I recommend The Last Boy Scout. This was another satirical, Shane Black scripted deconstruction of the action hero released in the early 90s. It's not as fantastical as Last Action Hero but if you like self aware action films it's definitely worth a look.
But I think as time goes on Last Action Hero will be seen i a better light and get more of the recognition it deserves.
