I am confused about his motivation for doing that and killing his crew to achieve his goal, did he go insane or did he want to achieve something.

He wants to expand scientific knowledge. To be the first human to go through a black hole and experience what lies beyond!
His obsession to go through a black hole is driven by insanity - that's why the rest of the crew don't want Anthony Perkin's character to remain on Reinhardt's ship. The crew want to repair their ship and leave before they get too near the black hole's gravitational field. Reinhardt also uses zombie-type humans as his robot crew - a clear sign he is crazy with no regard for morality.

No sensible reason is given in the movie. I think we are meant to think he is not only mad, but has always been mad.
It's a movie that makes no sense at all from start to finish so the only thing driving the action is that flimsy premise.
I mean, this is a character who turns his crew into cyborgs, builds an army of robots, wants to fly into a black hole, and has French Empire dining room, complete with chandelier, on a massive space ship. And it's not a comedy.
