I think that Disney probably wanted an easy cash-in two years after STAR WARS. And they made this! It also 'borrows' from 2001 and FORBIDDEN PLANET too.

I have a feeling there's a great "making of" documentary for this film... that Disney will never give us
A fast cash grab maybe but there are stories about disagreements between Disney and the director ,where the director had wanted to make a far darker movie. And I still believe the movie suffers from that on the one hand it's quite dark, gothic and adult while on the other hand there is all this kids friendly stuff that feels out of place in this movie I wonder what history would have thought of the Black Hole if Disney had let the director have has way. My hopes were high when at several times plans of a remake were announced but so far nothing...
There are a lot of things to like about The Black Hole. I love the dark tone of the film, and some of the effects were really quite spectacular. It's almost a horror film in some ways. And yes, that score was absolutely fantastic. It really adds great ambiance to the film. Dare I say, I have watched The Black Hole more times than Force Awakens or Last Jedi... combined! And I enjoy The Black Hole more than either of those latter-day Disney sci-fi films.
The worst thing about the film was the end. Did they just run out of money or something? We see the camera spin in slo-mo around each crew member, get a few garbled words, and that’s it? Done! Really? They missed the boat on doing something approaching 2001’s level of psychedelic awesomeness. It’s too bad, because the buildup was very good up to that point, including the Hell scenes.

Sure. But this movie depressed the hell out of me when I was a child.

You can't be hating on Roddy McDowall

It didn't have his name on the credits so I'm thinking it was a quick paycheck for him.

The score was/is great, but the design of the Cygnus was also worth watching the movie for.

I like a lot of Barry's work. Out of Africa is beautiful.
But I doubt he would be proud of what he did here. The opening theme or overture with its absurd prog rock swoops is laughable.
And that OTT thing near the end with those bombastic ascending chords; it's almost parody.
