Why didn't Jeremy/Gloria approach Claire For John?

Jeremy and Gloria were dating for a couple of months before Claire's engagement party. Of course they needed the engagement party and wedding scenes but wouldn't it have made sense for one of them (especially Gloria) to say hey just give him 5 minutes.

I wonder that myself unless he was thinking his sister in law didn't like him anymore or that John was that miserable.
