My favorite part is a little hard to describe. But I LOVE how this movie perfectly captures the feel of that decade. I just a little guy during that time. But as I've grown older I hold the 70's as a decade in such awe. This movie is a perfect example of that decade. How simple things seemed in Haddonfield...well until Michael showed up.
I also like that Carpenter didn't flood the movie with images of Michael...we're only offered brief glimpses of him and if you ask me the entire "less is more" philosophy in horror usually works so well and Carpenter knew how to do it.

I agree with the op in that it's very effective how you hardly see Michael much, but just glimpses or like a shadow or shape of him. It was so creepy.
My favorite scene though is after Laurie thinks he is defeated, and Michael is laying in the background. He slowly does the Undertaker sit up spot and it's like "ohhhhh shit, it's on now!" I love that moment. I find myself rewinding it (yeah old VHS copy) everytime I watch the film.

That definitely is a good part! She has her back to him and that is something you never do with Michael!

For me, it is the shot of Michael driving by the mask shop, the head turn after Bob's death (Bob's whole death scene, really), entire intro, the entire soundtrack, the slow lighting to reveal Michael behind Laurie, and the shot of Michael on top of the stairs... "you can't kill the boogyman... AAAAAHHHHEEEE!"
