I definitely realize it's a daring thing to say I didn't like this movie, but I just didn't get it. For some reason, it appears to be a favorite among many film fanatics, but to me it seemed awfully slow-moving and at times just plain ridiculous. It didn't strike me as very funny overall, and the acting is akin to everyone running around like a chicken with its head chopped off, and the plot is almost nonexistent! As for any identifiable category or genre to put it in, forget it! I certainly will respect your feelings/opinions if you like this movie, but does anyone agree with my observations?

The only good things are the 2 things they kept for the sequels; the music and Peter Sellers.

I always thought the series was a fine line between too much attention to being a dramatic caper and being over the top slapstick comedy. Some fell to much in one camp or the other. The only one IMO that straddled that line successfully was The Return of the Pink Panther in 1975....love that movie.

@GusGorman You're absolutely right. I love the music!
@HarrisonHanksHackman I'm going to agree with you, even though I haven't seen any of the sequels.
Thanks to both of you! Glad to hear I wasn't the only person who thought that!

Don't forget Herbert Lom without him there wouldn't be half as much humor in the sequels

Yes but Dreyfuss is the icing on the cake the banter between Clousou and him in the second and third movie is priceless and in the forth movie he is the main villain and quite hilarious even the fifth movie (SPOILERS)had his moments certainly his reaction when he finds out Clousou is not dead.Only in the first movie the humor is very little and in fact Sellers was not the main star of the movie Niven was and Sellers wasn't even originally planned to play Clousou he only came into the picture because Peter Ustinov wasn't able to appear.Plus Lom and Sellers had previously appeared together in the comedy The Lady Killers(not the dreadfull Coen Bros. remake)
